Project MCW60 on 8800GTS *WORKED*

Well i was really really worried that i have to buy GPU Water block for my G80 GTS card, because Swiftech MCW60 won't fit on it because of the larger die size of the GPU and different clamp size.

So i tried installing MCW60 on G80, and it did worked. If you hold the mcw60 gpu block over the G80 series cards, you will notice that you can use two clamps with different combination to make it work. Pictures will tell you the rest of the story.

Oh one more thing i realize when i took off the factory HSF, the contact between Heat sink and the GPU was not correct. Picture number 2 will tell you what i am talking about. Manufacturers are filling huge amount of thermal past in between gpu and heatsink to fill the gap.
When i clear the paste and put Artic Silver 5 and tried to put the HSF back again i realize the contact is not proper. You guys should check that too.

The contact after applying ARTIC SILVER 5. And the memory wont even contact with the HSF at all.

Well i am doing some testing, it has been three hours and GPU temperature is kind of high interm of water cooling. 57 idle and 60 some load, and go upto 80 really fast in load.

Looks high to me.

Temps that high with water? what the hell is goin on?

How big is the contact on that waterblock?

From what I can tell, only about 3/4 of the area over the core is contacted when using that method... Thus the reason I took it off.

The waterblock has less than 3.5cm on each side of the contact pad.

Not only is the contact patch on the MCW60 too small, this mounting method also mounts the block "off center", further degrading the already terrible coverage.

I tried this with my maze4 and didn't even give it a test run. You can't make it fit properly.

One thing that might work is the Apogee 1U, as the apogee base will cover the entire G80 IHS, and you can also drill holes in the stock mounting bracket to get it properly centered over the IHS.

The MCW will work really well once it has the ability to be mounted dead on centre.

The actual core of the GPU is fairly small... Smaller than the patch at the bottom of the MCW at least.

Sure, but it wont perform as well as a sink that covers the whole IHS.

Proof? I've never seen the core. For all I know the core is rotated 60 degrees like the R600 core, which would really skrew things up.

Agreed, a full IHS block would be better... but not really by all that much. Tops of 5% maybe.

As for the core size, most internet sources are pointing that the core is 480mm^2...

sqrt(480) = 21x21mm or so... The contact patch on MY mcw60 (measured RIGHT now) is exactly 30x30mm.

As long as the die is positionned dead smack in the middle of the IHS, it should be totally fine.

There is a way we can take the plate off of core, just like old times and put the block on the core.

One other thing, to let you guys know that small additional core what ever you call it, is really pentium III. Got man that thing get really really hot, we need additional water block for that sucker.

Any other ideas of link would be appreciated.

I will do some more experiments.

Of course, but there is no way in hell I'm doing that to a $700 graphics card ;)

Nah... put a beefy ramsink or NB sink on it, and aim a fan at it. Should be fine.

Make custom bracket to get waterblock centered, remove IHS off core, pray. Good luck.

I remember reading a post on XS that mentioned swiftech is working on a mounting clip for it that should be out about in about 2 weeks.

I really like the Apogee 1U idea. Maybe someone could fab up a custom mounting bracket.

That external chip can be cooled by a small NB HS...

Passive...

Check out the Sparkle TEC cooler...

We really shouldn't need to remove the IHS to get it to play well with the MCW60...

Ok i took off the thermal pads i had over the memory and small chip. Now if i want to put the stock HSF back, i see there is a gap now between memory chips and HSF + Small chip. The stock HSF is not making contact properly?

I applied ARTIC SILVER 5 on the memory chips too + small chip + main chip.

What should i do, should i leave the gap or what?

I am worried about small chip, memory chips should be fine, any suggestions please.

a few minutes of research determines that, for the core, that (on the evga at least) the core is NOT soldered onto the heatspreader. Go delidding nuts!

Get some new thermal pads? The fact that the smaller core is cooled by a ram pad, really tells you how much heat it's putting out...

But that small chip gets really hot with the heatsink on and 80mm fan blowing air on it. It is like a 7600gt core chip.

Where can we find really really cheap thermal pads, with free shipping :D

Any one know any links to the cheap thermal pads, or there is a thermal paste we can use on the memory and put the heat sinks on it.

I hate to break it to you folks but the MCW60 and the Apogee are EXACTLY THE SAME. The base plates are perfect matches for each other, probably so Swiftech can save money. The contact area is 28mm square with the entire base plate being 51mm square.

A little forum search will turn up some older posts of people who had compared the two side by side showing the identical base plates. In fact the Apogee 1U is simply an MCW60 with different mounting brackets. Totally pointless venture to try the 1U on the 8800.

I am going to check the contact today of my MCW60 and the core. Because i read in other forum that guy used the MCW60 on 8800gtx and his temperatures are in low 60s.

ORLY. Well I guess I can't argue with a forum search.
