Things are coming together on my little behemoth: Marduk.

I've laxxed a bit on the Norse Mythology on the reccomendation of a friend, and adopted what was supposed to be one bad mother fucker from Babylonian mythology for the namesake.

I don't have any real "mods" done, as I had most of them done at the factory (i.e. my custom built PSU). Other than swapping out fans (blue LED CoolerMasters were the fan of choice, due to their price & performance (23dba, 43CFM).

Any suggestions on worthy mods would be appreciated, but keep in mind this system is in a server chassis that I do want to eventually rackmount. So, no windows for me.

But, here's the start.

the RAM arrives tomorrow; after it's in I can mount the HSFs onto the Opterons. Unfortunately, due to space constraints, I'll be zip tying them to the heatsink, as displayed above. If anyone has any other ideas on how to permanently mount the fans between the fins, let me know.

Well, I am not too far behind. I am just waiting on my CPU's. I've got the ram and the board, PSU and everythings in the case.

Can't wait until Tuesday. :D

okay, dumb question:

how in the world are you going to mount two of those massive coolers on the setup?

I wouldnt think that both of them would fit.

I was wondering that myself. I was thinking about the CoolerMaster Hyper8, however I doubt that it would fit due to the proximity of the ram modules.

Otherwise, it would fit the sockets. I don't know, it would be an easy thing to check since he has the board and the coolers there.

I checked it. Clearance over the RAM is about 1/8". I can bend the heatpipes on the heatsink if it doesn't fit quite right. (unfortunately, I learned just how fragile they are yesterday when my phone on my belt caught it and pulled it off the dresser and bent it...luckily it bent back.)

hence, I need to put the RAM in before I mount the heatsinks.

the heatsinks will fit just fine in relation to eachother, and there's enough room for the power cables to go in between them.

the main thing I had not accounted for was the exhaust fan, which was originally a 38mm thick Panaflo L1A. That was too large, so I ended up taking one of the stock fans (120mm, 110 CFM), and 5v modding it so it'd stay quiet. It was either that or spending 13 on another Coolermaster fan. Anyway, clearance between the CPU1 HSF and the exhaust fan is about 1/8" as well.

Could people stop getting my hopes up by naming their mods after black/death metal bands?

First Behemoth and now Marduk...

That is all... Good luck with your mod. :D

You gotta get some imagination, sir. :)
Necessary Evil:
Marduk looks to be a good folding machine. Too bad about the rack mount, though. You could easily mod it to wall-mount and make a cover for the top (which would then be the front)
I'm always looking to convince people to wall mount PCs. It just makes sense.

Ya gotta name them. (at least in Windows...I think I remember doing it in Linux as well).

I could just as easily gone with "Server1" or something randomly alpha-numeric...but fuck it. Might as well do something interesting with it.

I wanted it to be rackmountable....that was an active part of my case selection process. Otherwise, I'd have the PC-2000B from Lian Li.

As far as wallmounting goes....the previous version of this system (a 3500+ A64) weighed in at 68lbs.

I've added an additonal hdd (but removed a 5.25" device)...and moved to dual CPUs and a beefier PSU.

I have a feeling this system could easily weigh in around the 75lb mark. Too big for my CaseAce Geargrip...and probably a little too much for a wall-mounting.

I can't wait to get mine running. Unfortunately I have to wait until Tuesday. :(

Sweet. What issues have you run into with the C0's? Or have you run into any problems yet? I am using the same ram, mobo and CPU's for my setup.

I'm trying to flash the BIOS...but it's being a pain in the ass.

keeps coming up with himem errors.

something tells me that Win98's boot disk doesn't really like the 4gb of RAM...I'll call Tyan tomorrow and ask about this.

I'm not sure what's missing because it's a C0, and what's because it's an old BIOS...but there's nothing for temperature or system monitoring (fans, etc.).

ok.

I edited the config.sys on my win98 boot disk to disable himem.sys.
I was able to flash the bios after that.

the 1.01 bios added/changed the lay out quite a bit.

now I have CPU temps, fan speeds, etc.

I'll install an OS saturday, most likely, as that's the soonest I'll actually have time to tinker around with apps.

Well I am looking forward to getting my Opteron CPU's on Tuesday. I'll get some more ram next week also.

So far everything looks good. I can't wait to get mine done. I've been chomping at the bit to get it done since about two weeks ago. What video card(s) are you going to use NecessaryEvil?

I hope, that since mine is the newer revision of the board, that I don't have to update the BIOS. I wonder if the first released BIOS is why it doesn't support C0's officialy?

you'll have to update the BIOS....they just release 1.01 like last week.

anyway....I was going for 2 6800GT OCs...but I'm waiting to see what the new cards from nVidia do..

Just a little FYI, but Marduk was the one basically responsible for creating humans in the Babylonian religion. It's been a while since I've read the Enuma Elish[Babylonian Creation story where Marduk appears], but basically Marduk[representing Order] slays Tiamat[representing Chaos] and from that Humans were born to serve the gods so they could relax and chill. You can read more here

So far the mod looks cool. I don't think I've ever seen heatsinks/heatpipes that big before, though.

that's so awesome looking. too bad they don't face in the direction of the case airflow. oh well, bet it still cools very well.

I was aware of that aspect of his mythology...I checked wikipedia on that.

A friend of mine who's into the mythologies suggested it due to the fact that he kicked just about everyone's ass in the process of creating it ;)

His books had more detail than Wikipedia did...so I went by what he said.

I personally planned on either Thor or Odin had I gone with Norse....I still technically have time to do so, as I've not installed an OS.

wow... nice work!! Love seeing those two sonic towers side by side... The remind me of the apartment buildings from the Jetsons... well, a mini version of them. ok - dating myself. heh... can't wait to see your rig when she'z done. :)

Thats a really amazing machine!!!
But, you will really use Windows 98 on that machine ?

You give many dollars out for the hardware and whats with the software? I think Windows XP will be the better OS ;)

hell no I'm not running 98 on the system. XP64 at home and Server 2003 when I'm using it as a game server at LANs.

the VMware systems are running 98 due to the small memory footprint; I'll have just about every (useful) OS on there, 98, 2000 Server, 2003 Server, XP32, Linux

Fucking hell. Now I have to RMA the board...the NIC is bad :(

Ohh OK, I got already fear :p

Are you sure? What makes you think that? Not saying you don't know what your doing, but NICS rarely are bad out of the box. Just wondering if you missed something.

enabled in BIOS.

CMOS reset multiple times.

no lights on the NIc prior to OS loading.

drivers loaded (but like I said, it looks to be a hardware failure, not a software issue). It just says (and acts) like there's no cable plugged into it when there is.

Was tested with all 4 ports on the router, and 5 known good ethernet cables.

Everything works on one, but not the other...I'm clueless as to what it could be other than a bad NIC.

Hopefully my RMA will get me one of the newer revisions of the board without the SSI header...

I'd call Tyan just to be on the safe side. As far as the board revision I can't say that its actually better. I'm afraid that the C0's won't work on it. I'll know on Tuesday.

Blow out the rj45 fitting so to make sure nothing is crossing any of the connector landing points... :)

damn.. i want one.. thats a bad mofo.. i specially like the dual pci-e for sli action.. hehe

edit: damn.. thats one expensive mobo..

That's a monster setup for sure... I had to wipe the drool off the keyboard! Those are c0 steppings, single core Opterons, right?

Very clean look inside.

Not to mention you get full x16 bandwidth on each PCI-E socket. You also get dedicated memory for each processor. So you can enjoy NUMA goodness.

I can't wait to fire mine up.

hell screw server duty.. i want that for my desktop..

That's What I thought. With a pair of Opteron's on their, she should fly.

I know with mine, I'll eventually upgrade to dual dual core processors. Mmmm 4 way goodness.

Of course now that 7800's are comming out, I'll probably upgrade my video cards too.

HOLY HUGE HEATSINKS, Batman!!!!!!!!!!!
That looks very cool with the two of them populating the upper half of the mobo :D
