Lemme introduce myself a little bit:
I'm 16years old, Canadia Student and love PC stuffs and technologie like all you guys thats why im here. Also im french but doing the best as i can to practice my english, thats the second point why im here

NAS was always something I wanted, I mean, a PC witch could serve as a server and download those 'You Know What' files from internet on the night, without having my Gaming pc's leds/fans disturbing my sleeping. And in the day I could use that PC as HTPC.So now the main goals are:

-Silent PC
-No leds/lights
-HTPC softwares/hardwares
-NAS softwares
-Must be small(well...)

Okay, so before we start;
1. Im not rich, Im saving money, so i'll be really cheap on this project
2. My skills are limited...
3. Im sometimes slow at doing things.

DAY ONE

Ok, I looked around and found that pentium 3 Motherboard:
1iv6.jpg

It has a 933mhz CPU and 512meg ram.

2pn6.jpg

From my pentium 4, i removed my ComproPVR Tv Tuner (not even compatible with MCE..) and found a old Geforce 4 with S-video/Composite + a 10/100mbit Eternet Card.

Oh man, big day today... I removed a Power supply from his case(had to unweld/reweld things) and cutted un-needed wires:
3ci4.jpg

The result is pretty good to me,

I also mounted that 'I/O shield'? to the motherbaord using somekind of 'washers'?:
4qa6.jpg

(correct me if im wrong) well, it hold on tight

Now i will need to find something to hold a hard drive, and remove my IDE 120gb to put it in this project.Right now it looks like the PC will be somewhere near 13"x8"x6" Im thinking about building the case with wood; nut sure yet; the case will have 3 fans, but they will work slower.

Thanks for reading; big thanks for answering!

The key is to look for a case that will use a single slow RPM 120mm fan. That way you'll only need a CPU fan, an exhaust fan and a PSU fan.

What's your budget?

Underclocking is your friend too. Can you overclock/underclock on that board?

If you're good with wood, you could make it quite pretty

Have you seen This Case? It's less than 50$ Canadian (it's from NCIX too) and would be ALOT easier.

There's also This one that, right now, is going for 40$ open box!

@Arcygenical, Yes i could use a case, but hum, Im better working with wood then metal :), yes, i can underclock; thats a good idea, but i still need a cpu fan, a psu fan and.... a hdd fan... Maxtor drive... My budget will vary from 5$ to 50$, really; i'll be really cheap on this one, im using old hardware after all :p i might buy a Remote Control, or make one myself (DIY Guide) , Since my TV is only 20" i prefer save for better TV then put it on the box itself, you know.

@MrWizard6600: Too bad for you then :p :p

Tommorow I will try to work on this the whole day, my dad will give me wood too, today i got most of the parts found, and just draw some plans on sheets.So expect news by the nexts 12hours.

Thnx, Agashka

agasha, if it whould not be too much trouble could you make your picks a bit larger ;)
oh and keep it up man

DAY 2

Well, i found found wood, but it's not starting really great;

The thing is , our 'table saw'? is outside the house, might be all wet, so today i mostly gonna:
-mount the motherboard to the wood, find HDD holder and modify it to hold a 120mm fan.
5li6.jpg

Right now im thinking about MDF, not sure if my dad got that, But well, Rona Kent & Wal Mart are juste meters away from my house!

[some hours after]
Oh well, it stopped raining, I went outside and...
6vj3.jpg

...Cutted 5 peice of wood to make the box,
7sy4.jpg

Here a quick look how its gonna look like inside, The HDD and PSU will have to be raised a little bit, and I will include 2x90mm fans

I had to make the box bigger, so its now 9.5" x 14" x 7" I think

@Arcygenical: New Brunswick; Canada, in a city lost-in-the-middle-of-nowhere, thats how i used to call my city;

@Solarfall: Alright!, just lemme finish install Photoshop and im gonna size em up all to 800x600, witch i think is ok for our 1024x768+ monitors.

More updates comming after supper! I had to went get the TV at Wal Mart, a 32", didnt fit in the car, so i had to walk up to my house with that blue cart, ahah!

DAY 3
Well, on the week i got school/work so i didnt work really hard today, but still I did put 1h to assemble to wood parts together, and plan how the interior would look like:
sunp0003el2.jpg

please tell me that you are going to paint that mdf monster, cos....well don't get angry, it looks a bit ugly ;)
you know, this would be perfect passive cooled case project,

Bigger, slower fans. I love the Antec tri-cool 120mm ones that came with my case. At the lowest speed they still move a bit of air and are silent for all intents and purposes. Otherwise, I wish you good luck with this. Also for your setup, Zalman still has an old school golden flower model that will fit a P3 or Athlon, and I have one on my XP 1800+ that is really good too. I am thinking about replacing the fan though; not quite silent enough...... :mad:

Nice, but just one thing, i would put that power supply on its original case, you will get alot of static, etc from it, might affect the rest of the components and on the best case scenario the sound.

@Solarfall oh yes man, i wont be cheap on the painthing tho, gonna be black(of course) with some designs I still dont know.

@brasherman I tested all the fans on my pc, i plugged them on 5v not 12v and man, i cant really ear them from 2 feet. The CPU fan gonna run 1/2 its original silent speed, so might be like 15dba.

@IntimidatorX true, but i might build a small box for it, or i dont really know yet, well its supposed to be away from the motherbaord, and if it does 'static or etc' i will put it in a box; thnx for the warning tho.

DAY 4; too much works to do to work on the project, sorry

Back from work, i putted a small ammount of time tonight;
@Danny Bui: Windows MCE of course :)

Oh and i just found a 4.7uf Capacitor and 4.7 kOhm Resistor for my PC Remote guide, witch can be found here
Oh if there any electronic guys here that could help me, how to find a 5v Voltage Regulator and 1n4148 Diode plz and thx (how identify them)

edit:
oh i think i just found a Voltage Regulator;
quote from wiki "For example, a common regulator such as the 7805 has an output voltage of 5V"

On a voltage regulator , there that written:
"7805
UC8834
KOREA"

I was not able to find more information about it, anyone got a idea about this one?

If you're looking for electronic components, head over to one of the following places:

mouser
Digikey
Newark

search for the part number, and you'll get what you need just fine.

yes, but why should i pay for something i areally own? but thnx for the website, i need the 38khz IC
