Project: Green, Cool, & Quiet

I have already revised my original design :)

Here's what I'm going to make (rough sketch...not scaled properly):

I notice you've only left one PCI-E slot open. What about other expansion cards? I have the same board and am incredibly disappointed with the onboard sound, to the point where I may have to get a dedicated sound card.

Also, that pump/res looks really nice. What is it?

I'm really liking this Sarbz. Are you gonna put a window in it? or just a image cutout? keep it up!

what school you at borg?

sounds alot like my school :S

and you COULD try and get a riser card and mod the rear slots so you can put a pci card without having to raise the cover too much ;)

It's an AGP slot. I don't need any pci slots right now. If I do in the future, I'll cut another slot.

I'm quite pleased with the onboard sound. The audio is very clean, there's no noise or distortion. It sounds identical to the audigy I have now, and the audigy2 I've owned in the past. So I'm choosing not to use my audigy, and go for a more simple interior.

The pump is part of the Thermaltake Bigwater kit. It's not an expensive pump or kit. The whole thing was about $110 w/shipping. It looks nice, but it's not a high-end pump. It's quiet, and does what it needs to do in my case, but if you are serious about low temps....go with something that has more power.

I installed a koolance GPU-180-L06 and the OCZ ram sinks on my 6800gt last night. My 6800gt load temps dropped 20c compared to my nv5!!!!! And my cpu load temps are up about 2-4 degrees depending on if I'm loading my 6800gt at the same time or not. That's an acceptable trade for me. 20c for 2-4c!!!

I ran 3dmark05 stable 5 times in a row at 430/1100. If I try 440, it throws it back down to 370 automatically. Must not be enough voltage or something. I'll have to try that next.

I decided to use this machine as a semi-htpc. But, I really don't want to add any additional pci cards (it will screw up my mobo cover idea :D)

So I sold my 6800GT, and bought an X800XT AIW. Should be here monday. I love nvidia cards, but the AIW series just kicks ass. I love tons of features to screw around with, and the x800xt is equal to, or slightly better than a 6800gt @ ultra speeds. Besides, from what I've read, it shouldn't be hard to get the x800xt to pe speeds on water :D Should be fun to screw around with for a while.

I'll be out of town for the weekend....but I promise a BUNCH of new pics early next week.

ok....no more progress on the mod as of recently. I sold my 6800gt, got the x800xt AIW, and haven't been able to do anything but play with it since it arrived :D I hit 6822 in 3dmark05 at 600/600 and stock voltages (bumped my A64 up to 2.2ghz/1.5v for that bench). I'm REALLY happy with this card. It's a great overclocker & performer, and the tv and video functions are awesome.

I'll quit playing with it this week some time, and finish up the motherboard cover.

Check your temps again =), you might see that they've dropped.

X800XT AIW runs pretty damn cool on my DIY kit. I think the max load i've gotten on it is 40*C after 1 hour of getting lost and repeat killing of demons in Doom 3. And the best part, my cpu temps didn't change a single bit.

yeah, this card definately runs cooler! When I run it at 600/600 for benchmarking, it gets up 46. Otherwise, it stays around 42-44. It's a good 10c cooler than my 6800gt ran.

<flame bait>You now see the superiority of ATi and it's pwning-ness</flame bait> rotf :D.

Alright, you've done a very great job on the mod so far, and one of the coolness factors in your mod is that it's kept quite clean and simple. Let's see if you can continue this through the rest of the process, I think it's going to turn out great in that case.

This mod is looking great. I am a huge fan of silent systems, but it's the quality of this that's really so nice. Oh, and you actually managed to not make that green look gaudy. (Something I would never achieve.) Bravo, I say! Bravo! Absolutely smashing, eh?

still in prgress....I'm just taking a break for a while.

I'm working on a way to cool my HD a little better without buying anything :D I have some old heatsink I might experiment with and see what I can do.

I'm also thinking of using some 90 degree connectors for my wc setup. I don't want kinks and I don't want a ton of tubing in my system either. It's low-flow & 1/4", so I think I'll be ok with the 90's.

My Koolance GPU H2O block sprung a leak. It's nice because you can rotate the nozzles, but they don't seem very sturdy. That's where the leak was. It just dribbled a bit on the bottom of my case. No hardware damaged, but it did ruin the paint a bit :(

I RMA'd it back to frozencpu for a new one. Unfortunately, they don't refund money on h2o products, just replace them. Maybe I just got a lemon? Maybe I chose a cheap block;)

the rubber-bandy stuff you used on your hard drive...what is it called specifically? I have been looking for it everywhere but I don't know what it is called officially.

Officially, it's called dollar store bungie cords. Seriously, it's a bunch of ruber strands inside a nylon sleeve. I stumbled on it at one dollar store, and haven't been able to find any since. These particular ones are thinner than regular bungie cords.

You can go to a sewing supply store and get elastic cord. It's not expensive, and will work just the same as my bungies :D

good luck!

Thanks!

I knew what it was made similar to bungie, but could never find the slim stuff like you have.

I have about 7 different dollar stores around me so I will check them out, and the 10 or so different sewing shops too.

Thanks again!
