EDIT: I'm now devoting all of my time and resources to this project:

http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=923678

My goal for this sytem was to create a good gaming/graphics system that was as quiet as possible and as cool as possible (within my budget :D)

Here's what my orginal setup looked like:

3700_before.jpg

Stage 1:

After a little internal modding, a new mobo, and new power supply:

3700_after.jpg

I removed the HD rack in the front. Ripping this out dropped my overall temps. MUCH better airflow now. It also allows plenty of room for a 120mm radiator and fan :D

That's a SilenX 120mm @7v in the back. The Zalman 7000cu was at 5v, and my NV Silencer 5 runs at the lowest speed all of the time.

My new Seasonic Super Tornado 300W rev A3 never ramps up!!! I love it!!! It's the quietest fan-cooled power supply I've ever heard. Period.

There's also a Card Keeper on my 6800gt. I had to modify it a bit to get it to fit my NV5. The 6800gt weighs so much with the NV5, the Card Keeper makes me feel safe :)

I didn't remove the 3.5" bay because it will hold a fan controller eventually.

3700_suspended.jpg

My decoupled HD....What an improvement over the stock antec rubber bushings and drive rails! I can barely hear my drive seeking (it's a maxtor sata 7200, so I'll never get it completely silent). It runs warmer ~40c-44c, but it's an acceptable trade off for me. It's pretty dang secure too. I thought it would be dangerous, but I don't move my pc much, and even when I tip my case around and upside down, the drive doesn't move.

Stage 2:

I got a Thermaltake Bigwater Kit for my birthday from my wife (isn't that awesome....my wife actually took the time to get me something for my hobby....even though she thinks it's a waste of time and $) It really does perform good. My cpu at load is about 10c cooler than what it was with the zalman 7000cu.

I modded the radiator and fan already. I took off the stock 120 (too loud) and put my 120mm stealth on, but reversed, so it's pulling air through the rad instead of pushing. I had it mounted in the front of the case.

I'll be using the stock 120mm antec fan for the rear exhaust.

I had everything assembled in the case, but last night I ripped it apart to paint.

nocase.jpg

Here's the case stripped apart and painted. I masked off the top and bottom as I wanted to keep those black, and didn't want to rip out the rivets that hold them on.

case1.jpg

case2.jpg

case3.jpg

That's engine enamel. Should be tough enough.

I'm planning on getting a vga block for my 6800gt. I already picked up some OCZ ram sinks for it.

oczsinks.jpg

I've got a DFI Lanparty UT 250gb on the way from newegg ($65 shipped / refurb). I'm not going to put it all together until I get the new mobo.

That's it for now....I'll post more updates soon!

The "cool" was intended to represent temperatures, but now that I re-read my title & post.....it could be read the other way. Oh well, it will be cool, AND cool

yeah, when I get more work done on it ;)
Hey that green color reminds me of 1970's era Porsche 911's, you know the ones with the black lettering on the door and small duckbill spoiler? It's nice! With that 120mm fan on the rad, you said it was a pusher for front exhaust, and the rear fan is also going to exhaust? If so, I suggest a floor-mounted 120 and maybe some side panel fans to equalize the airflow. Keep the cabling nice like you've been doing and this machine is gonna be COOL!

Thanks! I'll have to do some searching for the porsche.

EDIT: hmmmm.....now I'm getting some new ideas :D

Actually the stock fan on this kit pushes into the rad. I reversed it so it's pulling. It will be pulling air from the bottom front of the case, throught the rad, and into the rest of the case.

Case <- Fan <- Rad <- outside air

I've experimented with putting a fan on both sides of the rad in a push pull config.....it didn't make a difference. The limiting factor of the bigwater is the low flow pump & 1/4" tubing, not the radiator.

The rear fan is an exhaust. It's pretty much equalized right now, but I'm planning on creating an air inlet in the door to cool my HD too. So that will probably equalize it better considering the rad blocks some airflow.

the motherboard colors are yellow and black. im curious how it will look up against all that green.

Funny you should mention that :D I was just working on that. I'm fabricating some small covers that will cover unused slots/ports/headers. They will even allow for the cables to come out. Right now, I've made them out of paper, but I'm thinking of using either a thin plastic, or some 2mm black craft foam that I have. Suggestions on this are welcomed!!

The only thing I'll have to paint is the agp slot, and the ram slots. I'll be using a junk agp card and some junk ram while I paint (carefully) so I make sure the contacts stay clean.

The rentention bracket will come off for my cpu block.

Maybe I'll just fabricate a complete mobo cover and stealth the whole mobo? :D

EDIT: Wouldn't this be nice:

I need a real-world photoshop tool :(

Yeah, that's the car! Carrera RS, I believe. Nice car and nice case! Maybe you can implement some black into your theme? The two colors go well together. The On3Up mod is gonna be green and white on black, but not that green! I still don't know what kind of theme I'm gonna do tho... So I hear ya on the design changes! Good luck, altho you don't seem to need it
:D

I painted the psu (after I took it apart), io shield, pci slot covers, and the slot cover off my 6800gt last night. They are a nice smooth semi-gloss black. They turned out VERY nice. I'll post pics tonight.

I'm also leaving the front bezel and the side panels black.

I'm trying to decide on a window right now. I'm not sure I even want one.....but with the insides turning out the way they are, I think I need one. I might switch the side panels around so I can cut a full window out instead of messing with the latches. (I'll post pics of that tonight too)

Not a huggggggge fan of the green but nice job on matching the colors. It should be nice when its finished. How hard was it to paint the inside of the case? I plan on undertaking that soon but it looks like a pain in the arse. :p

Painting the inside of the case is actually easy. Take apart as much as you can. The more parts you can pull off the case, the easier and cleaner it will be. Mask off what you don't want painted with good masking tape....crappy stuff will allow bleeding.

I like to have things about waste high when painting. You can get a good even coat on all angles that way. Put it on a big cardboard box, it works perfect.

The inside of a case is much more forgiving than the outside. You won't see flaws in the paint as you would on the exterior, because there usually isn't as much light to give them away. I used a semi-gloss engine enamel on mine. Even if there are imperfections....you can't see them.

And always give it 2, 3, or even more coats. Light coats are the best way to go. If you try to get 100% coverage on the first coat, you're more than likely going to end up with drips. Then you'll be pissed

no, not for the inside. If I was painting the outside, I would sand, prime, sand, prime, sand, paint, sand, paint, sand.....you get the idea ;) It's a pain in the ass to do it right, but the results are always so rewarding.

the first thing i thought when i saw the interior painted was the Grave Digger monster truck

keep up the good work!

Alright, I put in the new DFI board in tonight..... :( Great board....crappy colors.

I wonder if John Deer needs a new computer for trade shows or anything? The yellow HAS to go. It looks horrible with the green. It's so crappy, I don't even want to post a picture of it all together. I definately have to paint the yellow parts or fab a mobo cover. hmmm....

I know some modding stores sell PCI-slot covers, but I'm not sure how well they'll fit on the various size slots that board comes with. I'd say go for a mobo cover with either (a) green acrylic or (b) clear acrylic with window tint. Maybe green acrylic with window tint, but I'm not sure how that would look with all the lighting.

I've decided to make a mobo cover. Here's what I'm thinking:

mobo_cover.jpg

The black blobs in the front and back represent the fans and the radiator. I'm going use a sheet of aluminum to hide the dvd drive & power supply. I plan on painting it black, and applying a decal of my company's logo.

I'm also going to use a piece of painted aluminum to cover the remaining drive bays.

The motherboard cover will be made of aluminum and painted green to match the case. I have an old guitar amp with a steel diamond pattern grill that I'm going to steal and incorporate into the mobo cover. This will allow for some airflow where it's needed.

I'm also sketching some ideas for graphics on the mobo cover. Something simple and clean...not too busy.

And finally (well, not really....I'll always be changing something :p), I want to cut a vent in the front door of my case so my suspended hd can get some cool air without having to leave the door open.

I'll take some new pictures tonight with the front bezel and side panels.

if your going to cover that mobo over with something that isnt vented

MAKE SURE you have a good amount of airlow UNDER the cover to keep the various things on the mobo cool or your gonna have a trapped bunch of heat, and thats gonna SUCK

I have already revised my original design :)

Here's what I'm going to make (rough sketch...not scaled properly):

diagram.gif

The black strips are velcro. I want this to be easily removable. The velcro will be completely hidden, beacuse the bends will all go inward. It should look nice and clean this way. There is an 80mm fan hole for a fan to blow out into the case. This should pull air from the openings (mainly the top area around the ram and processor) and exhaust it directly under my video card (perhaps helping to cool my video ram just a weeee bit after I install the vga block). I don't expect this air to be very warm. I'll run the fan at 7v to keep it quiet, that should generate plenty of airflow for this use.

I'm going to use some 2mm hobby foam to act as a sort of skirt around the agp opening in the mobo cover. This will help prevent air from being pulled through this hole instead of the top area.

i was thinking, that design looks really cool and all but why not make the cover cover EERYTHING but the ram and the CPU bracket and the cpu itself, then run some small fans to push air around and keep it cool ;) i think it would look pretty cool and work well, what do you think?

cant get muvh more stealthed than that :p

there would only be a thin strip of aluminum between the ram opening and the cpu opening. It's not worth it. I really want to have some airflow there anyway. I don't care about airflow down by the pci slots, but I do around the cpu and ram. There's a lot of stuff up there that gets hot to the touch. I don't think it's a good idea to cover it all. And I don't really want to add any more fans than I have to.

Besides, I think it will look cool with the steel mesh stuff I have. AND.....the thermaltake block has that nice led in it. It looks very cool lit up, and I want to show ALL of it.

Oh man! You just have to install a window! I agree the insides are looking rather nice and it would be a shame to hide them.

dual side panels? ;)

window underneath a solid panel ;) sounds do able and it give you options ;)

I didn't get anything done on it tonight. I put new brakes on my car tonight, and it took longer than expected :(

Anyway, here are some pics of the current progress. It's a mess right now, but I just wanted to get the dfi board in and tinker with it. When I'm done with the mobo cover.....you won't see ANY wires :D (well......maybe the power lead for my 6800gt. Not sure how to hide that yet).

Doesn't even look modded here :)

Hello John Deer!

The thermaltake does have some bling

I made the inside panels and the graphic for the top panel tonight. It's starting to look really clean inside. I can't wait to get started on the mobo shield. I have the plans made, and the sizes down. I just have to make a cardboard one and do some last minute tweaking before I start bending the aluminum.

Here's a shot with the new internal panels attached. (with velcro so they can be removed easily)

Ugh, bending aluminum... now you sound like my Mom's boyfriend.. a very stupid roofer he is indeed.

Anyways, this sounds like a mod I could do at school easily, with the machines.. :)

I wish I had machines :( I just have a couple pieces of wood for bending nice corners, a utility knife for scoring, and a dremel.

Yeah I have Manufacturing this semester...
So I can pretty much do anything you would need..
Aluminum Brake
Barfold Brake
Drill Press
Lathe
Oxy-Acetalyne Brasing
Arc Welding
MIG Welding
TIG Welding
Stock Roll
Mobile Crusher thing (Fun for destroying other peoples binders in)
Yeah, I think you get the point.
