Project G5

Looks great! What's the deal with all the spare space in the PSU enclosure though? Seems kind of wasteful to manufacture something that large for such a small PCB. I guess the extra space around the heatsinks can't hurt though :)

This is why :) I don't have a clue as to why its that big. Only 350watt too.

I have some real progress to report. I decided to do a test run of the components to see how everything fit together.
Now have a pretty good idea regarding cable management, and placing all the WC components.

Other than the motherboard (which I'm happy with the fit) I'm going to pull everything else out and do some tweaking.
I still have to work on mounting the radiator and the reservoir.
I'm also going to pull the fans apart, and paint the housings black.
I'm going to paint the (floor) black.
Paint the odd looking thing that the pump is on black.
Re sleeve and lengthen the fan cables.
Sleeve the pump cable.
And replace one of the sata cables. One is bad and the system won't post since its a raid0. To get it to post I ran 2 cables outside. It was getting late and I was getting frustrated.

I'm going to pull the tray back out and paint the section that is behind the chassis.

I think it's starting to look decent.

I love how the HD's came out!

With the WC stuff in place. Its not mounted, but this is the basic plan.

It looks very impressive. I'm looking forward to seeing it completed after your interior painting is done.
I like the reservoir idea and the color match between the eye and the case is perfect.

BTW - If you are painting the fans, bottom tray, & pump housing bracket, you may want to make it complete and also do the DVD drive and the HDD cage. Hope you plan to use vinyl dye for the plastic.

Yep, I have looked into durable finishes for plastic. Vinyl dye or Bumper paint seems like the best idea.
Bumper paint would be a slightly textured matte finish. It's supposed to be durable.

I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do with the dvd drive, I was actually thinking about fitting a piece of plexi over it. If nothing else, it will get painted.

I made some more progress tidying up the system this weekend. Its not complete yet, but it's getting close. I wired up the front power switch. I'm afraid that's all I did with the front. I'm not an electrician and wiring up the rest of the circuit is a bit more than I want to deal with.(Who needs front usb when I have usb in the monitor)
Hard to tell, but I used plexiglass to make a mounting system for the Rad, I cut a 1/4in piece for the bottom, then cut a hole in it to fit the Rad.
For the upper mount I used 1/8th and bent it several ways. I attached it to the bracket in the case with double sided tape, I screwed the other side to the Rad.

It looks like a lot of airflow is blocked. But its running at a nice balmy 34c idling. I have the Q6600 clocked at 3.2ghz (right now), and while folding the temps are about 45c. The GTX275 is staying at 79c folding. So it seems that I won't be having any trouble with cooling.
Another plus is that it's almost silent. The front fans don't make any audible sound at 900rpm. Same goes for the powersupply.
I can hear the videocard a little. I have its fan set at 70%, and the cheap NB fan is a bit loud

I can't believe how much dust shows on it. I blew it out and wiped it down before I snapped the photos. Even then fingerprints and dust are showing up.

That looks great. Kudos. I've always wanted to get a G5 case and use it for a PC build.

I think that the watercooling is too messy, and cluttered.

I'm going to rip some of it out and try to clean the install up. That means that I'll probably be removing the reservoir, it's been the most annoying part of the whole install.

I'll be redoing the entire bracket assembly as well. There isn't really a need for the bulky, and odd shaped piece that the pump is mounted on.

I'll get some pictures posted up later, after I quit procrastinating and get some actual work done.

Ok, today I managed to get my new motherboard and misc parts installed and running.
It's an EVGA Classified SR-2 running 2 Xeon E5530's, 6gb of Corsair Dominator 1600 ram. Its cooled by 2 Scythe Yasya heatsinks, each running a Slip Stream 1900 fan.

The board absolutely massive, and it was a challenge to get it inside the case. There are several things wrong with the installation right now, and they will stay that way until I get moved. The motherboard tray is very much too small, and I'll have to to some thinking on what to do about it. I'm going to need a back plate that has 9-10 expansion slots for starters.
I'm also lacking on open space in the rear of the case. I was worried about too much airflow being blocked so I have reversed directions on the fans.

The 2 60mm fans that are in front of the PS case are doing their job of keeping the PS cool, but they have gotten very loud in the process. I'll have have to think about replacements. I also need to add an extra fan to the heatsinks. I'm very happy with the price/performance ratio of the Scythe's but they will need a 2nd fan to maximize cooling.

Now for the pictures, this is just a test run of all the parts together. I haven't added any of the trim panels, or done anything to pretty it up. Unfortunately that part of the build is going to be delayed for a couple of weeks.

I think I'm probably the first one to have an SR-2 in a G5 case :)

It's all great,,, but the reservoir is especially interesting.

Just wow, can't wait to see what you do with the build with the server MB in there.

I can answer that for you. He shall use it to fold!

Look at the screen shot. He has folding running to push all the threads to 100%

That's actually the only bit I didn't like. I feel it's jumping the shark on an otherwise very classy build.

Actually it's gone, I started to feel that same way. And it was a major pain, it never leaked, but it never fit quite right.

Yeah, I noticed that. :D
My only other complaint was that I would have liked to see it with a matching mobo and then bam SR-2. Fucking gorgeous dude. So jealous!

Optical and Hard drives are overrated anyways :p

But are you gonna try to fit the drives?

Ya, I'm not going to be able to fit an optical drive in there. But I am going to be reinstalling the HD rack, it's going to go up top, probably attached to the top of the case.

I meant what he plans to do with the actual case.

Maybe you should get one of those slim internal reader/writer and somehow shove it in there with a slim slot in the metal to put the cd through. I've seen somebody do it in a lian li and it looked great, I'll take a look and see if I can find the pics.

it's on this page.

I saw that slim drive trick, its very nice looking. However an optical is pretty much out of the question with that board installed. It intrudes on the horizontal space of the drive. I'd have to rotate the drive 90 degrees to make it fit, and I'm not cutting into the case anymore.
It's not something I'm worried about. I can't even remember the last time I used it. I've even got my flash drive able to boot windows now.

To answer your previous question. I'm planning on getting/making another motherboard tray to mount the sr2 on. And I'm going to have to rearrange the cabling so that I can actually get everything running in the right direction and maximize airflow. I also plan on mounting 2 fans in the front. It's going to have to be 140mm max, because I have a 200mm fan and it's too wide to fit in the case. I'll also be adding another fan to the heatsinks. Because you wouldn't believe the amount of heat this system produces. It's kind of like having 2 OC'ed I7's running 4in apart.

Even with the relatively low clock of 3420mhz the system has noticeably increased the temp of the room its in. Its creating more heat than the 600watt bathroom heater I have.

It's 50 degrees outside and I'm running a window ac.
