I know I know, project name is kinda lame but what can I say.
Essentially, this all began at work, I have a Dell Optiplex 760. Found out I am going to be doing alot of SQL and ColdFusion, which means it was time for more HDD space with better read/write times. Standard SATAII will not work for my needs here.
The system specs otherwise are perfect, Intel E8600 @ 3.3GHZ, 4GB DDR-2 800, not a bad Dell renamed mobo, has a PCIe1x and PCIe16x slot for expansions.
First problem (and the real reason this project is on)..... My powersupply does not meet specifications (stinkin dell PSU) for more HDD's. It has only one spare SATA power connector. Add in the fact that there is only ONE spare HDD holder in the case, and I meet with disaster..... Heres where the project will now begin.
WHAT WILL HAPPEN:
1) Remove and strip the case down to what is necissary and add-in needed items, which include a 4 Channel PCIe1x card for Serial attached SCSI RAID card, 3x 500GB Seagate (possibility of fourth in next month) SAS drives, 2x NIC cards for full data transfers only (effectivly making my own NAS which will run from a VM).
2) Prep new case (Raidmax Smilodon) and do some necissary changes to the case as well.
3) Neatness. This case is going to be a hot and heavy baby on the HDD heat generation so cable management is going to be a must if I am going to ensure nothing interfears with heat distribution.
Now, why did I choose the Smilodon? Multipul reasons.... biggest is price. This is a very nice case with alot of extra bells and whistles (some not necissary) for a low low price. Now even though my company purchased the case for the HDD's, I still could not just ask for any case( I have a budget too). Also, the case does come with a 500w Raidmax powersupply with all the necissary connections I need for the system.. Also throw in the abundance of room this case has, and im happy. This case will be loaded with up to 4 SAS drives, 2 regular SATAII drives, 1 SATA DVD, 1 SATA Blu-Ray drive. The two regular SATAII drives will be in a hot-swappable drive array that fits into 2 5.25" bays. (In order to fir the array I will have to do some slight modification to the drive bay itself)
