Just got some new old hardware (old as heck but new to me) last week and I don't have a case to put it in so I decided I was just gonna do it open-air style with some plywood and wood screws. Got snooping around in my grandfather's garage and found some plexiglass from his clock-making days which he willingly parted with, though, so the whole deal will be mounted onto that.

This is my first experience with plexiglass - hell, it's my first time "from-the-ground-up" PC build - so this should be quite interesting as I start learning the joys of cursing at a new machine.

As far as materials, I've got 3 different thicknesses of plexiglass (acrylic, by the way), ranging from what looks like around 1/4" or 3/8" to something around 1/16th of an inch or so. My only tools up to this point are a dull hacksaw that I found in my dad's truck (lol) and an 18v cordless drill. The plane of plexi that I've mounted the old socket 8 intel mobo to is one of the horrendously thick pieces and actually looks pretty good considering I cut it with a hacksaw and haven't sanded/filed anything yet.

Not sure if I'm just gonna make this into kinda a platform that supports itself or if I'm going to attempt to take the torch to the plexi and bend it into some hanging brackets or something of that nature.

I'm waiting on a power supply so I can't make a mount for it yet but I'm working on the drive rails right now. Two hard drives and one 4x CD-ROM shouldn't take more than an hour or two to hack outta this thin stuff (keep in mind the blade is REALLY dull). If I can get a digicam, I'll post some pix so you guys can have something to laugh at as well as having something to give you a confidence boost about your own modifications/construction projects :).

Anywho, any ideas on anything else to add are welcome - I've got a LOT of plexiglass I can go through so I can afford to mess up - the only thing it costs me is time and cigarettes.

heh, I read the title and thought you were mounting a gun rack on your case or something :D

linear, <smacks head against wall>I could've used that link two or three nights ago when I started this whole thing...maybe I can get an idea of what other people are doing with their custom plexi jobs...thanks all the same.

BigD, heh, no gun racks...the title is only because I live in a very redneck town in a relatively redneck state. Couldn't think of a retarded title until I heard my neighbor's truck revving like crazy (stuck in the snow). All the same, gun racks in a computer...hmm...that'd take a really large case...or a handgun...maybe I'll try that out with my old case lol.

Update:

OK, a few things have changed since I started this - I can't get an ATX power supply at the moment. I went to a local comp store and asked the owner if he'd trade a p3 450 (slot 1) for an old PSU out of a hewlett packard he had laying in pieces in the back, which he agreed to. Didn't bother looking at it so I didn't notice until I got home that it was an AT PSU. Really put a halt to my plans of using the Pentium Pro 180 as that motherboard is a standard ATX...but at least the mobo tray thingie is drilled for both standard ATX and Baby-AT... I do, however, have a Pentium 133 with Baby-AT motherboard so, that's what I've been using.

Haven't made anymore headway with the fabrication on this project but I have got the machine up and more or less running. For some reason, this lil bugger won't boot from the WD Caviar 1 gig HDD I've got, nor will it boot from an older Maxtor 540 MB drive I found. I've messed with everything in the BIOS that I could and still can't get her to boot from anything but a floppy (which is fine if I run menuet but I'm wanting to run an older distro of openLinux on this thing). Not sure what is going on here so any suggestions are more than welcome.

I'm withdrawing from college tomorrow so I should have some spare time to work on this thing with...think I'll start with finishing up on cutting/assembling all the plexiglass. Any suggestions on the best adhesives to use for bonding these? Preferably something I can find at Ace Hardware or Lowes (neither of which carries IPS weld-on)...
