I'm working on a tech project using several servers and a buddy who is across the state. want to have a way to communicate what has been done on the machines in an easy way. Is there any good collaboration tools I could use (web based/free preferred). I know project management software is all over and I'm kind of lost in it all. It's a small project and I dont need any real complex tools. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
 
basecamp is in the same vein as activecollab and webcollab as well. Pretty barebones compared to something like Trac.
 
++ for trac's

It is really easy to setup and manage (got 5 instances running of a lighty server atm :D) and there is soo many plugins to make it all shiny (although the git plugin is borked atm)
 
Redmine. Tracks svn submissions (you can reference tickets in the commit messages and it will attach the update to the tickets, even close em), charts, repository browser. Very good system.
