Project: BayPC

Got some more done today.

First, got the power molex installed. Yeah, yeah, it's dusty inside. When I'm done I'll clean everything up.

I also slapped together a plexi faceplate. May or may not be permanent, haven't decided yet.

I've also improvised a simple top. The front and rear of the case are a bit higher than the sides, so I have a piece of plexi cut to fit on top and between them. It's just set on top when I slide it into the big case, works well enough. Tomorrow I'll be drilling vent holes and wiring everything up. Should be functionally complete.

Wiring plan has been finalized. Only going to use the 5 volt line and I'll tie the fan into that since it runs fine at 5 volts.
 
If you do keep that plexi faceplate, you should definately wire some L.E.D.s in there or something :D
 
whats a dremel circle cutter? or did you mean dremel rotary tool and not a curcle cutter attachment for the dremel itself? good job, ya kinda beat me to this, I was working on somehting along these lines a while back and just put it on the back burner.
 
DarkMonkey, I'll be putting in some green and red LEDs for power and HD.

Whatsisname, I have some aluminum sheet that I may use once I'm happy with the design. The plexi is a lot easier to work with right now.

TheMostWantedPolishTwin, keep an eye on ebay, every so often you can get one cheap. Hell, I might be getting rid of my third board like this with a Celeron 500 and 128MB ram.
 
And I'm basically done except for some soldering, so here are some quick final pics.

Air intake holes drilled. yeah, they're not perfectly straight, I can live with that. Power switch, power LED, and HD LED holes drilled and items installed. Also drilled and filed the cutout for one USB port. I still have one more port on the board, might try to put one in the back of the case if I find a need.

Once I do some upgrades, it'll be moved to the black case on the left below.

And yes, that's a real Porsche emblem. Fits the curves of the door quite well.
 
Was given to me many years ago(~15) by a friend of the family. Laid in a desk drawer until last year, never found a real use for it.
 
looks nice. i'd either tint the plexi or make it completely clear. i'd tend towards opaque myself.

Advantech ships these boards with a fan on the heat sink, is it really going to work ok without a fan?

I have one of these boards that I'm stuffing into a Sun Sparc Classic case. People usually take the power supply out of the sun case when they install an ITX mobo, but it powers this board no problem.
 
It runs just fine without the fan. A PIII-500 like the one I'm using(1.6 volts) only puts out 13 watts. I've also got a Celeron 566 that only puts out around 12 watts(1.5 volt chip). The fan will keep temps lower, but I'm already below 40C under a full load. As long as you have good airflow in the case, and the CPU is low enough in power usage, it'll be just fine.

Looking at my spec sheets, Advantech lists power usage for a Celeron 433(2.0 volt chip) and 64MB of RAM at around 26 watts. Doing the math, I'm around the same level for my whole setup, so it's not surprising these will work with about any PSU. Hell, I have a PSU from an old(~7 years) Sony dual CD case that happily powers the Celeron 566 setup.
 
I think that's the one Tom61 is using. A bit bigger than my board, 8" x 5.75" for that compared to 4.75" x 7". Sure, some might say it isn't much, but that 1" is the difference that allowed me to put sides onto mine.

And as an update, I'm redoing my wiring. Thing goes into random reboots right now, but is fine when power is connected directly to the board.
 
Awesome. I noticed the CF card slot on the back. What would that be used for? Like a solid state drive? I guess with a 1gig CF card you could fit the OS... Does it support MicroDrives? Also, if you don't mind telling, how much did you pay for your SBC?

Yep, that's the board I'm using; PCM-9574. It being the same width as a drive bay is a very limiting factor, as there is no room on the sides to put anything.

I hope all goes well after your re-wire.

If you can find a CF card that works, it can be used as a hard drive. I've only had luck with small 4-16MB cards, nothing big enough to run much of an OS. Microdrives don't work, at least not on mine. They don't fit for one, and even with a modified slot(I tried) the board doesn't recognize them.

Prefer not to say what I paid, I plan on selling my one extra working setup.
 
Did my rewire, has been running for a bit over 24 hours right now without a glitch. With only the 70mm fan@5 volts the CPU is at 45C under a full load. High, but well within safe range.
 
Thats pretty cool. If I made one, I'd have it set up as a dedicated game server (mentioned above). Just the thought of having a game server inside but isolated from your gaming rig is so awesome.
 
VERY curious, but where did you get that SBC? My ancient laptop that I use from time to time finally had it's hard drive die, so I have the ram, cd-rom, floppy, and lcd to use . . . and that LCD interface is awesome!! No controller needed for that puppy :cool:

Would it be possible to boot that system off the same PSU as a main computer? It's extra-low amp needs wouldn't put much of a strain on a good PSU [Antec TRUE550], with the drives not taking to much . . . would it be feasible?
 
I've mentioned it before, but I got one off another forum and then some off Ebay. I actually have a "spare" SBC with CPU and memory that I'm probably not going to ever use, have it listed in For Sale or Trade.

I'm currently running this one off an Antec True 430 along with my normal PC. I originally had power issues, but after a rewire those were fixed. Now there are no problems other than poor cooling, I think I need to up the voltage on the fan or put the original heatsink's fan back on. It will sit idle for hours, but under full load it has rebooted a few times. Only cause I can think of would be heat, but I'm not sure if it's the CPU, video chipset, or maybe even the unheatsinked northbridge or memory.
