Project Anima Mundi

Well now that you've invoked the cat, there must be no more updates until Caturday! Or Friday, depending on how I'm-done-with-finals Thursday night goes.

so it is gona be an aqua commputer?

More than likely. It all depends on the state of my finances when I go to buy the rest of the watercooling gear. If anyone happens to have a spare pump or block kicking around that they would like to go to good use, send 'em my way. nOObtard was wonderful enough to pick up the radiators for me, and since they're G1/4 threads, I can go with either a high or low flow system, I'm not yet committed to either one.

just a simple question from a simple guy.
which program do you use to create those nice 3D pictures ?

thx anyway

Sketchup 5 Pro by @last software. Check out the free version through Google.

Sketchup is so easy to use, even the most software-illiterate of people (me) figured out how to use it within an hour:

on topic: are the fans on the rads the fans you're going to use in the final setup?

Very nice work. Sketchup is absurdly easy to use, but powerful enough to do just about everything the average modder needs. Rarely do I have to move into Catia or Solidworks these days heh.

Anyway, yes, I do plan on using those fans. Couple reasons, 1 they have a wonderful noise/ cfm ratio, 2 they are wonderfully glowy, and 3, they are already bought and paid for haha. I do have a special plan for the top fan, which might end up getting used for the front fans, but no hints on that.

Well I have good news and bad news.

I thought I was going to have a wonderful update involving a painted, glued, and lit cube that was literally two steps from completion. Instead, I have to start over from the beginning.

I was/ am using Krylon Fusion, a paint that has worked very well for me in the past. I wiped down all the parts, masked off the edges, stuck on the templates for my artwork, and started laying down the paint. It spidered webbed on me (can't remember the technical term, orange peel only much less dense). Okay, I figure, I'll just sand the effected pieces down, clean it better, and start again. Then I flipped one of the pieces over, and found this.

The plexi cracked along the webbing. I have never had this happen, ever. It made the stuff so brittle it cracked in half just from being tossed on the bench.

Worst case scenario, I have to redo the entire case from scratch. Best case scenario, I save most of the panels, and Anima Mundi gets a twin because I've already cut all new panels.

Just by the by, my buddy Paul hung out all night and took pictures with his snazzy camera (I want to say it's an xTI, plus some fancy lenses, but photography is his hobby, not mine). So if you want to go check his snapshots out, you can click HERE

Wow that sucks big time!!!!

I just looked that the MSDS for that paint & there appears to be good reason for why that happened unfortuneatly:

Materials on the Pennsylvania Right to Know List: Amyl acetate, isopropyl alcohol, methyl ethyl ketone, toluene; isobutyl alcohol, xylene and ethyl benzene

I wonder if a clearcoat applied prior to this would help your cause, but I'm sure you have all kinds of thoughts going through your head :(

Once I got over my morbid fear of large dark bodies of water, I was good. After the initial "oh frack, what are we going to do?" things were just fine. The scramble out of the rapidly filling cab was probably the worst part.

Anyway, updates are incoming I do believe, I'm going to try to get the top, back, and bottom panels ready to glue.

Pics of the truck?

And how high did the water get once everything was in equillibrium? If they had 44's would the cab be dry?

You're going to have to explain this a bit more, as I don't quite understand what you're saying. I think I know where you're going, but if you could elaborate a bit it would be wonderful.

44's probably would have kept the seats dry, but not the entire cab. The water was up to the top of the bed box when all was said and done, there was just enough of the rails exposed to put our feet on.

Next time I'm out at the shop I'll take a couple of pictures, though they wont be quite as spectacular, the trucks down to hauling spec (meaning 6 inch lift on 33's) last I checked.

damn, sorry to hear about the paint :(

I know! Hopefully I'll be able to save most of the panels, and then Anima Mundi will get a twin!

Hope! Slight cracking in a couple small spots. Saved all but the top panel.

Well look what I just so happened to cut? Enough panels to build Anima Mundi's twin brother? Perhaps...

Not identical twins though. What am I doing here?

I was just wondering if at first a clearcoat would "protect" the acryllic enough to prevent this paint from pentrating the material and causing this to happen unless you believe it was due to some other factor. Seems like a lot of work though.

I'm just sitting back & watching this evolve now :) .. Things looking really nice!!!

Looking at where the cracking was - at least on the panels, the HD racks are just screwy - it looks like anywhere there was pressure applied at some point (i.e. where a hole was drilled) there was cracking. So, I'm thinking the cracking, albeit microscopic, was there since it was drilled, and the paint just got into said cracks.

I've also started on Anima's twin, I'll start a new project thread tomorrow sometime. It's sort of Anima 2.0, I made a couple changes that should improve the whole project.

why not "Pheonix" because it was born out of the ashes of the old project

looking forward to it.

what rubber grommet spacer doohickeys did you use for the hard drives, and what thread are the screws?

thanks

I do believe the bolts are 6-32, and the rubber spacers were just in the rubber section of my favorite local hardware store. I'll check what the label says when I head in there tomorrow.

In other news, Anima isn't getting a twin, Anima is getting replaced. Apparently there were more imperfections than I thought, the back panel basically snapped in half. So what would have been Project Gaia is becoming Project Anima Mundi. The first round of pictures will be up tomorrow. Concept pics should be coming tonight sometime. It's the same fundamental design with a few very interesting changes.

In other other news, Oracle is coming back.
