Progress on UD

After all the crashes and missing stats, they finally managed to restore all the stats up to 2002, which IIRC was the time most of us joined the project. My personal points total is almost there. So unless you join in like 2000 it will be just some way to go.

So for those of us who were patient enough to wait out the problems, I think we are close to getting back on track.

It seemed longer than 3 months with like 5676457354357 threads per day on the subjects of missing stats, lack of communication, people declaring they are leaving, etc., and the amazing speed the mods locked down those threads and/or edit/delete posts and all.

Yes, it was part of the reason that the [H] UD team has seemed to be flat these days. The stats were messed up. However, I am betting that some of us moved on to F@H full time with all that crap going during the period of uncertainty and down time.

I'd like to point out that UD ran for 5 years virtually problem free, while stanford and the others had tons and tons of downtime, client crasing problems(took months to fix), stats reset, workservers down for weekends at a time(almost every weekend)..etc

I guarentee that if stanford had this much problems, they would have just reset the stats completely and started over new(they have before).

UD could have gone that route however they decided to take the time to rebuild the current stats so that no-one would lose their scores..

*EVERY* project will eventually have problems, I'de say that UD not having any major problems till now is a good thing, give them time to make the changes, let them fix it correctly instead of rushing them.

Since you can't really "guarentee" anything about F@H, a project you aren't a part of, and the fact that you have not a clue as to what the project leader for F@H would do, you're just talking crap about F@H... as usual.

Much of the crashing that went on was the fault of the AMD CPU... that is a FACT. Not the fault of the F@H programmers at all. The level of participation in the forum that F@H users get from the project members personally, is so far above the UD crowd it isn't funny. Go talk some smak about something you know about, UD... quit the snide remarks about F@H...

Well let's see Larry I participated in F@H v1-v3 and G@H up to v0.98, I was participating before this team existed, the crashing problems existed in both and was *not* limited to AMD this is a fact, back then I was running AMD Thunderbirds and some intel P2s/P2 celerons(relic specials)/P3 setups, at least half my farm was intel, regardless of processor I had to rebooot (we'll use G@H v 0.94 one of the faulty clients as an example) just about every hour on the hour for months, each time they released a faulty client we made sure stanford was aware of the problem with the client the first day.

Also Stanford was well aware of the cheating problem, but their solution is "We fixed the problem with a script, but please don't tell anyone how to do it", when tested by members of the team it was found still active, yet stanford absolutely refused to listen or fix the problem.

You also can't deny that stanford's work servers crashed and remained down the entire weekend for months before they finally got around to fixing the problem.

Also how about all of us that were told our $500+ per month, for months on end in electricity was wasted due to the client crashing problem corrupting the work, not only that but our stats were going to be cut in their faulty WU purge process, their reasoning wasn't sound, machine ID and dumping was not the cause as I always used a fresh install of the client(didn't just copy the directory), not to mention I never participated in any of the dumps(thier reasoning of it was limited to those that had invalid machine IDs and those who participated in dumps was completely untrue, it was their faulty clients).

With your intolerance for the requirements and timelines of distributed computing projects, your tenure with Stanford DC is going to be measured in minutes. You could not have picked a worse project to compare to UD. Your "problems with ud" list could be squared and still not reach the level of incompetence of Stanford's DC effort.

Might I suggest The Electric Sheep Project, it seems much better suited to your temperment.

Anyway the point of my post was not to get into a debate, it was posted to prove that *EVERY* project has problems, people were acting like UD was the only project that has ever had problems, I was correcting that.

The overall point of this, is if you like UD do UD, if you like F@H do F@H, don't choose projects by downtime or problems, if you choose that way you won't be doing any projects.

Yeah, what happened there? The moons and stars not aligned properly or something?


My 2 cents on that OT issue: people come and go, they are just looking for excuses so that they won't look "wussie" or what not. These are volunteered projects. You can't force them to stay or go to a certain project. So really no point trashing one project over the other.

Can't we all just be friends?
