I currently being hired at a company, and my first mini project was to create a login script that will grab the computer information and send it back to the SQL server inventory for a autoupdate

I have little knowledge on programming any suggestions on sites i should look at would be great thanks!

i have a short window to complete this

This is worse than asking somebody to do your homework for you. How about you tell us what you've already done/looked for?

Not much to go on to help you with. And this thread, at worst, speaks poorly of the overall hiring process.

pay me and I'll do it for you, and you can keep your job lol

This is not what my job requires me to be doing, its just a simple test that the boss threw at me.

He just wants something automated when logged in that will update the inventory on the SQL i believe

Where do you work? Before I help, I want to make sure they're not competitors of my employer.

I didn't want anyone to do the work for me sorry if it came out that way, I just needed guidance

I'm currently doing power shell and making my own code here but how can I get a specific property of the class?

Example

Get-wmiobject -class win32_networkadapter and i just wanna pull out the MAC address of the primary NIC

been looking through http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa389273(v=vs.85).aspx for classes and stuff

MACAddress

Data type: string
Access type: Read-only

Media access control address for this network adapter. A MAC address is a unique 48-bit number assigned to the network adapter by the manufacturer. It uniquely identifies this network adapter and is used for mapping TCP/IP network communications.

I understand that being new at a job you don't want to say "I don't know how" or appear incompetent to your boss, but there's nothing wrong with asking the people around the office for help.

If indeed this is not part of your normal duties, and you did not tell your boss during the interview process that you could do these kinds of things, then you should just go to him/her and say "I'm not really sure how to go about this, could you give me some help with it."

If your boss in fact expects you to be able to do something he/she knows you have no idea about, then he/she is an asshole.

Otherwise you might as well try to build a jet engine by reading an ikea manual.

I did tell him that i know very little of programming. And he said he had faith in me and it wasn't so hard.

But i do plan on telling him hey this is not my field of expertise but i'll try to do my best

Start small since you're new to it. Try to pull single piece of information and store it in a SQL table. Then add some error checks to allow you to not just insert but update records. Once you have that piece down you just layer in the additional fields of data you need.

The basic idea is to assign the piece of info (IE IP address) to a variable then open a SQL connection and transaction and update/insert this information. So you'll have a section of the script that gets the data fields (google for how to pull the fields you need) then a section that does the update/insert (google for how to create and open a SQL connection and how to run a SQL statement with that connection).

Code project is a great resource as is technet. Like I said start small like having the script just do a Wscript.Echo with the piece of information you want to pull to ensure you have the right data. Then layer in the SQL piece. Once you have those two items done you just add in the additional fields you need and your done. It's daunting when your new so an iterative process will be a huge help.

is there a way to automatically capture the dxdiag information when they logon to there account and auto upload to a SQL server?

You really sound lost on this thread. A better line of questions to ask is:

- "What's the cost difference between you trying to cobble this together versus your boss hiring a contractor/company to perform this task?"
- "What turnaround time is expected on this project?"

This is a bit ridiculous and hardline

Quite the contrary -- I offered a pragmatic and alternative line of thinking for a deliverable that is scoped outside of the OP's current area of understanding.

your're a real dick, if you dont want to lend a hand dont even post here

well they really like what i made and what it grabs just need tweaks.

This thread didn't show proof of forward progress, hence my suggestion. Re-read the flow of this thread from an outsider's perspective, and you'll see that -- and that I wasn't being a dick about it.

I'm glad you figured out a solution.

Hmm ..., so you were hired by someone (who clearly made a bad hire) and asked to do something you have no clue how to do. Then you come here in an effort to have someone else do the work for you to save your job (and undoubtedly you will take all the credit). Then you call someone who differed a realistic solution to your problem a dick.

My guess is that the only reason his solution wouldn't work is because you would need to admit to your boss that you have no clue about what you are supposed to do at which point they would get rid of you.

The good news in all of this is that they will eventually figure out that you aren't a good fit because of lack of technical skill and lack of collaborative spirit.

Cool

Because you know what im a student they just came out of schooling and i told him straight up that this is not my field, i was not hired to do programming i'm just an assistant to a co-worker who contacted me and will be doing general IT work with hardware

And i want to learn and im learning little bits of piece here and their. I never asked to write the program for me

i used that code i posted and modified it to what i wanted and still tweaking and learning

Also what would be a good program that is like Powergui when i start typing a code it will pop up a list of different options

i've been using Notepad, should i look into Notepad++ or Sublime?

PTNL offered you sensible advice for your situation. If you're doing this just to learn, that's fine. But nobody reading this thread knows that. To the contrary, your posts have made it sound like you've got no idea where to start and your boss expects you to make progress.

Any project should consider hiring out work or finding something pre-built rather than rolling it anew.

ok i got my script laid out into a text file the way i want it, now i need to make a connection to SQL database i believe and upload the results from the text file into columns

here is a code that i have found

Const adOpenStatic = 3
Const adLockOptimistic = 3

Set objConnection =
CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
Set objRecordSet =
CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")

objConnection.Open_
"Provider=SQLOLEDB;Data
Source=sql_servername;Trusted_Connection=Yes;Initial
Catalog=database_name;UserID=username;Password=password;"

ObjRecordSet.Open "INSERT INTO
jiveLoginStatus(Jdate,Jtime,Jip,JComputer,Jusername,Jstatus)
values('" & Date() & "','" & Time() & "','" & IP_ADDRESS & "','" & strUsername & "','" & strComputer & "','" & strStatus & "')'"_
objConnection, adOpenStatic, adLockOptimistic

Am i on the right track? i just need to understand what its trying to do

RecordSet.Open isn't meant for non-query statements. Seems odd to have date and time in two separate columns. Use bind variables to make your code immune from injection attacks. The newline literals in your connection string will cause it to not work.

hmm okay i gotta play around with it, im just setting up a SQL database on my home computer to play around with it
