I am constantly installing new software on XP machines that will not run under a domain user account until i hack the registry. Problem is, with new programs, it can take a lot of time and trial and error to find the key that is causing the issue, and reset the permissions.

It would be far easier if there was a tool that would display something like:

"program x is attempting to write to registry key y"

I know its a long shot, but is there anything?

RegProt is just the thing you want. It asks if it is OK for a program to add important keys. Best of all, it is free. While you are there, take a very strong look at Process Guard and Wormguard. I don't know what I did without any of them. They are "must have" software.

Be aware that you should temporarily disable RegProt when you add certain hardware, or the drivers may be blocked from installing. I found out the hard way. ;)

Regmon by Sysinternals.
Yep, that's the one if you want detailed monitoring. It's more involved, but will be far better when looking for a conflicting key. RegProt, on the otherhand, alerts you when the changes are initially made. My bad. Still, you should get both.

excactly what i was after. geeze the registry is a busy little boy ain't it!

Thanks guys.
