program needed for asus xnoar download

Apparently I can't figure this out. Trying to download from the ASUS site I had no program that would open the support files for xonar essence. I loaded some program called winRAR which did download the files. However I know see that this is not freeware and I must purchase the program after 40 days.
I thought this was a zip file but I can't get a simple free zip program to open these files. I don't know what a RAR file is and I am not needing to pay for this program just to open a pdf manual or driver upgrade from ASUS. Their website leaves a lot to be desired as for communication regarding downloads for such a larger maker of mbs and cards for pcs, perhaps I am just not on the education level they expect people to be on technology?
What am I not understanding as I remove the winRAR program from my pc.

WinRAR will function past the 40days, and simply ask you to buy it every time you open it (At least the version from a year ago does this), so don't worry about it too much. .rar's are like zips, just a tad more optimized.
 
7-zip is free. Do a search and you will find it quickly. Opens everything I have thrown at it.

It handles rar, zip, ace, etc.
