Hey guys, first time poster here looking to get some advice from some knowledgeable people. As this is posted in the Video Card section I’m hoping to get some insight on them. My dilemma is I’m in the market for a new Video Card amongst other things I will only deal with that here. Now the amount I pay for a video card isn’t really of a concern I would like to spend less than 800.00 for one. Now the question I have is pretty much which one… from what I read for a single GPU gtx480 is the way to go but there is some argument that I should go with the 5870. I am also worried that new 6000 series ati card will come out or even a >gtx480 will come out within the next little while.


So here I am a toss between currently gtx480 and the 5870 or possibly wait for an up coming card assuming that it’s coming out within the next 2-3 months. Insights?
 
with an unlimited budget i would wait until AMD 6xxx series comes out, lots of speculation that it will be soon.
 
Hurry up and wait or if money is no issue get a GTX480 , will make a nice physx card when it gets humbled by the 68/9XX series
 
If money is no issue, just get one of them and sell it when new cards are out.
Or is it?
 
Wait for AMD's new 68xx series 69xx series. This will do 2 things, bring cards that are awesome and 2 lower prices of current cards. We're right at the point where new cards are on their way so it's like buying a 2010 car at full price when the 2011 is due in 2 months. Now how will you feel with less than 10,000 miles when the 2011 car has 50 more Horsepower & 22 more lb/ft torque and comes standard with navigation. :D

I'm just saying, see what is coming first.
 
while i said money wasn't really an issue i would rather not run back and forth since i'm lazy. but i thank all for the insight i'll wait a few months see if the 68 and 69's from AMD are gonna do for the market.

One other peice of advice is when the 68xx series hits, buy it immediately with no delay. Basically, shortages will more than likely occur driving prices up within a month or two after launch and it might take a while for prices at retailers to drop down to MSRP. Most retailers should laucnh most cards at MSRP though. So buying within the first few days is ideal when your model you want comes up.

With an 800 dollar budget, you'll probably be able to afford a 'dual gpu' card from the 69xx line. Aka the '6970' which should probably do very well if all things ring true. The only question is really about crossfire versus sli performance whether 2x480 or a 69xx would be better. I'd tend to lean towards the 69xx performing better due to raw power but sometimes ati drivers have rather ...sucked such as the first six-ish months or so that we had AVP out until just recently when they fixed crossfire when everyone is done/has played the game to death.

from what ive been reading the 68XX will be the replacement for the 57XX. and im not sure when the 69XX cards will be out. you could be waiting to nov or dec if you want the high end 69XX card.
