Need a new L2 gigabit switch for my home network to replace my old Cisco 2940 / unmanaged netgear gigabit switch and I am looking at the above 3 switches on eBay as they are all within about $50 of each other at the moment.

I will need 802.3ad and basic vlan support, SFP uplinks for the fibre runs and for it to be quite quiet (not like my current Dell 5224 or Cisco 3560), SNMP for graphing the port use, maybe iSCSI (so flow control and jumbo packets)

I am pretty handy with IOS CLI and with HP CLI / GUI so config won't be an issue but I think I prefer IOS

I know the 1810 is silent, I have been told the 2960G isn't too loud but I have no idea how loud the 2824 is.

Any advice for me here [H]?

2824 isn't all that noisy. If its in a basement or tucked away it won't be bad. I have one currently. It's a fairly old switch though and can be a bit picky about SFPs.

I beleive the 2824 is L3 as well. The newer replacement 2810 is L2 i believe..

what is the difference between the 1810-24G and the 1810-24G V2?

The 2824 does static routing. That's pretty much it for L3 features.

Take a look at Dell's 5224 and 5324 as well. Cheap and Full L2 capability.

what is the difference between the 1810-24G and the 1810-24G V2?

V2 brings:

  • real STP instead of HP's proprietary loop protection
  • 802.11az (Port based power control, for better energy efficiency), over all way lower power consumption

No one is certain. There are rumors that HP swiched to 3com for V2, but no one has proven it.

All I know is that a full load the V2 only uses 26 watts!

I haven't used one at all, but if you want quiet, it would probably be hard to beat the fanless 1810.
