Processor vs. SLI?

Ok, I'm caught in a dilemma and I need your guys' help. I have a bunch of christmas money to spend (although not a ton) and need help on deciding what would most benefit my system. Here is my current setup:

AMD Athlon 3200+ (single core)
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard
2 GB PC3200 RAM
MSI NVIDIA 7600GT 256 MB video card


I need help deciding whether a 4800+ AMD dual core processor would benefit me more or another identical 256 MB 7600GT to put in SLI mode.

I am primarily a gamer, but also a college student...for games, what do you think I would see the most benefit from?

Where are you going to get a socket 939 4800?

You would get a nice boost from a fast dual core processor, but socket 939 is dead.
 
getting a second 7600 is a waste of time.

Get the 4800+ if it's cheap, and then get an 8800gt once the price gouging for it is over.
 
I would try to get on opteron 165 or 170 and overclock it instead. They can usually hit around 2.6ghz no problem.

Otherwise you should hopefully be able to get the 4200 to at least 2.4.

then grab yourself an 8800gt in a month or two and you'll have a pretty good gaming system for the time being (crysis excluded, but you can't win them all)

That's a great processor, and if you're willing to overclock you should have some excellent performance. In order to maximize the boost you're looking to get in games you'll also want to upgrade your videocard.

As others are saying, something like the 8800GT would be the perfect bang/buck option.

Total between the videocard and that processor upgrade will be about $350.

After considering my options, I think I'll start off with the 4200+ I found on eBay and overclock it. Then when I have some cash in a few months go for the 8800GT.
