PROCESSOR UPGRADE FROM 2.5C to 3.4C

I want to do some upgrades on my computer from 9/02.

I want to swap out my 2.53 for a 3.4 Northwood ($329). I am valueing the 2.53 which I can swap into another machine at $100 so this part of the upgrade will run me $229 or so. Good bang for the buck?

I’m a gamer (oddly UT99). Present system runs UT2k4 ok. Haven’t tried Doom3.

I’m asking about the vidcard in that forum.

Here are the present specs:

ABIT IC7 (replacement mobo)
2.53G 533 P4
Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series 512MB DDR PC-3200
VGA LEADTEK|GF4 TI4600 128M VIVO

Upgrade path
2.53 to 3.4C Northwood ($329)
add another matching 512M stick ($114)
eVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6800 Video Card, 128MB GDDR, 256-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "128-A8-N343-AX" -RETAIL ($289)
$722

you could save some money and get a lower speed p4 and overclock it, perhaps a 3.0. most prescotts can easily break 3.5-3.6ghz

Heat issues on the 3.0E OC'd with air? I have a TT aircooler right now.

I have not OC'd the 2.5G since I ripped out the WC aspect of the rig a while back. No time to fool with the WC either, unfortunately... (my time for messing with computers impacted by kid, healed long-term injury (getting me back out at the track instead of glued to a chair playing UT), etc.) Heh: that hasn't stopped me from dropping my speakeasy.net gamers package for when I *do* play though... :)

(I had come to this thread to say THANKS especially for the good advice here and also in the vid card thread. Advice and follow-up was very much appreciated!)
