I have an athlon 2100XP for a year now and just recently the computer randomly shuts down and now it won't start at all. It doesnt beep or show any video and all the fans and everything runs for about 5-10 seconds and then shuts off. I unplugged the processor and turned it on and everything ran fine and never kicked out. I put the processor back in and it kicked out like it has been. Does this mean my processor is shorting out? or is there something i'm missing? Thanks for any help.

wait wait wait... you UNPLUGGED the cpu?!

if you meant that you took out the processor, the computer won't even boot... perhaps you might want to tell us what you think the CPU is that you unplugged is :p

Yeah i removed the processor and started everything up and nothing shut off. I put the processor back in and turned it back on. Then everything shuts off after 5-10 seconds...

by started up you mean the fans turn on, or it gets into windows, ect? i guess i'm just being stupid and missing something really obvious :p

ahhhhh!!! that makes soooooo much more sense. hahaha. i'm retarted today

it's possible that the cpu is overheating... how's the thermal contact with the heatsink?

The contact is excellent. I thought about the overheating thing and it would make sense, but sometimes everything will run for a minute+ with out shuting off... but still no video or beep.
