processor stepping help !!

Hi All,
I am in the process of upgrading my current 3200+ Vence to either a Dual Core Opteron 185 (2.6 GHZ) or an X2 4800+ my question is how do I check or find what the CPU steppings are before I order from places like Zipzoomfly or Newegg and which ones are the "best" to get ???

My current MOBO is an Asus A8V-Deluxe with AGP I DON'T PLAY GAMES so right now overclocking is probably not going to be happening....however I am also planning a MOBO upgrade to something with an Nvidia NForce 4 ultra....any suggestions ???

My O/S and APPS are however installed on a 74 GIG Raptor which gives the systems a nice boost !!!!

It also has 2 GIGS of Patriot Low Latency memory PDC2G3200LLK
with timing of 2-3-2-5

I mainly use the machine for Photoshop,Digital Photography and ripping movies
so I really don't need a high end gaming card

I just want the machine to be able to run and support either 64 bit Windows XP and possibly Vista

I plan on keeping the machine for another 2 yrs and not going to Core DUO 2 !!!!

no chance of finding the stepping before you order from these places, they won't tell you. You'll have to wait until you order the chip and it arrives. I wouldn't get an Opty 185, I would get an Opty 165-175 and overclock.
 
IIRC, the codes on the AMD box will not tell you the actual CPU steppings. You have to look at the heat spreader to get the stepping code. So, essentially, unless you get that RARE vendor that will guarantee steppings, you have to buy it to try it.

As for your MOBO, I'd suggest trying to find an ASUS A8N32 SLI. However, your MOBO choices may be very limited as most AMD stuff these days has gone to socket AM2.
 
DFI is good too, And since you won't be gaming or using SLI, the Infinity 939 series boards are supposed to be nice. However, it won't have as many storage controller options nor as many SATA headers as some of the more gamer/enthusiast boards so, your storage needs may play into this.
