Processor speed for SLI?

Hey guys just like to know what are your estimates on how high a processor clock should be so it doesn't bottleneck my future rig with two 6800 Ultras SLI both overclock to maybe 475.

Thanks

Even the new FX-55 is going to be a bottleneck for SLI. There just isnt a fast enough cpu available.

Yeah, I don't think you'll be able to buy a CPU that will allow you to use the full power of SLi. However, if you're gaming at high-res with maximum eye-candy and plenty of AA and AF then the CPU won't be a bottleneck for most of the frames and you'll be able to get a very nice boost going from a single-card to SLi configuration.

Get a 90nm A64 and overclock the sucker as high as she'll go (2.6GHz+ hopefully). Don't bother with Intel chips, they don't have the raw horsepower you need to get the most from SLi. For instance, an FX-55 is roughly 25% faster than a P4 3.4EE in games - that's major whuppage.

You'll have to wait for the end of the year to see CPUs that will START to provide the power to push SLI to it's limits.

Edit: I meant the end of 2005 people...sorry bout that.

I hate to burst your bubble of false hopes but there are not going to be any new cpu's coming out this year.

There probably wont be anything new untill like march for the desktop's. The fact of the matter is that AMD and Intel are busting ass to try and get out dual core server cpu's out for mid yr next year.

Read my next post...I meant 2005 bro. :)

AHHHH

Yea but the thing is we still need to wait for game developers to take advantage of multiple cpus :(

I mean if these games took advantage of multiple cpu's now sli would get stomped on by todays Opterons and Xeon's imo.

But who knows maybe AMD will up the ante a bit more by the end of next yr for the single core desktop cpus...

I do not believe there are cpu bottlenecks with the latest round of games. Look at the numbers. It is all about the vpu these days.

and by the way duel core cpu's for desktops is just a flash of bright light to blind and distract people. It is not the real solution to firing out more power for the desktop/gamers market, and I believe it will fail.

That may be true but with the introduction of SLI might and could eliminate the vpu bottlenecks, so i'm looking for a clock speed that might get rid of the cpu bottlenecks that SLI introduces

wrong thread

I didn't know where to put it really so i just put it here because more people look at this section and I am talking about both Intel and AMD processor.

Dont recall ever saying anything about desktop dual cores ;) But then again with a comment that ignorant you must think that 64bits for a desktop cpu must be a dumb idea and would have probably failed to huh  let alone Hyper Threading

Oh and as for the pc gamer comment...I'm sure that to a certain extent that Intel and AMD are thinking about gaming performance when they make up their whole PR speeches but I'll be damned if they build their cpu arc. with the gamer in mind.

EDIT: this can go here or in the cpu forums really. It all depends on how this thread plays out. Lets be honest the cpu and the video card go hand in hand when it comes down to game performance. You skimp on one of them and your only going to be hurting the other. So its kinda like whats the point of buying a $1000-$1200 (high-end) SLI setup if your cpu cant keep up? Also if cpu's werent bottlenecking games to a certain extent then why did we see the fx-55 raising the bar a bit more in the games that it was tested on?

If you're going to SLI 2 6800 Ultras in the near future, you're obviously working with a near unlimited budget. Get the most advanced vapochill and fastest processor (probably the highest clocked AMD, or an intel extreme edition) whenever you do this. Just sorty by price get the most expensive and overclock as high as you can. <3

Alienware has said they would be using xeon chips over desktop chips for their SLI systems. They must have a reason... possibly showing current desktop cpus arn't enough.

They were using Xeons because the only motherboards around right now that support SLi use the Intel Tumwater chipset and that only supports Xeons chips.
