Processor Life

My opinion is that by the time a OC processor dies, your computer WOULD DEF be outdated.....
 
Yep, my 1700+ which runs at 2.6ghz 24/7 is still going in my brothers computer, and I got it just when JUIHB processors were introduced... overclocking does not seem to reducs its life.

O it will.... but that 1700+ is at most what, 2 - 3years old? I think they're rated for over 10 years non-oc'ed. Overclocking w/o increasing voltage shouldn't decrease the life too much, but over volting will probably reduce it maybe 5 years? Anyways, 5 years from now most of us won't be using the same processor.

What I do find though is my memory seems to develop errors in an oc'ed system a lot faster than my processor going bad :p
 
It is always at 1.95-2v... that is an accomplishment in life span for anything running that much higher above spec.
 
I have an old BP6 with dual celery 300s @550 each thats been running fine for 5years now? Cant even remember when I got it. Its a web surfer for my GFs little bro now. No signs of impending death. Nowadays, for most of us, if it lasts 2 years it doesnt matter how much longer it can go as its in the trash anyways.

'outdated' is a relative concept. The 486DX2-66 my father bought back in the early nineties is still working fine as a router. The 8-bit CPU (can you say Z80?) you used in the eighties lives on as an MCU in anything from your microwave to your car.
 
Just remember many northwoods have died in 6-12 months on 1.8+ volts. It could happen to you too ;)
 
depending on core, remember a stock processor SHOULD last 10 years. The life span of your CPU will depend on if you have a 'good' one or not, if you know what I mean. Every CPU is different in a way or two, it's just your luck. However, the odds are that your CPU won't die before you purchase a new system, unless you buy a new computer every 6+ years, then u might have a problem. ALSO, it depends how much you OC. More OCing you do, less the life of the CPU will be.
 
It's all theory on how long it'll last. Just jack that voltage up. If it fries, you have an excuse to get the latest and greatest.

Right, It either gets the job done or dies trying. Better stuff is always around the corner. :D
 
LOL I had a 1.4ghz AMD Thunderbird a while ago, running on an ECS K7S5A... Now that was quite something. I had to flash to an unnoficial bios so I could move FSB past 133.
I ran it at 1.5 ghz for less than a year, and then it failed. The MMX instructions would no longer work... jpegs were showing faulty, sound cards not working, so many things would just fail that utilized MMX.
Well, it took me a while to figure out, but in the end it was the processor. I've had it for two years, and only about half a year from the end of its life was it overclocked.
Donno if it has to do with overclocking or not.
I looked at the CPU again recently, and I noticed a small chip in the core, at the corner. Very small though, I don't think it did anything to it.
