Processor Lapping

Is it wactually worth lapping a processor if you want to do some serious OC or is it more likely to damage the processor than drop temps?
 
Don't hear that much about this nowadays. Used to be a fan...now, not so much.
 
aslong as you follow instructions pretty well you wont damage your cpu.

as for it helping, it will drop it a few C.

i lapped a Q6600 but i couldnt check its before temps since it was for a friend but the cpu works fine and it was kinda neat seeing the heatsink stick to the cpu and see the cpu look like it was glued to the heatsink from the air preasure vacuum the lapped surfaces provided.
 
Yeah, it's probably not going to help unless it's really not flat. You have to keep in mind that you have to check the flatness of the heatsink as well. In my case, I lapped my heatsink first, but that made temperatures worse. Originally my heatsink was concave and my cpu was concure, so they actually fit together well. Once my heatsink was flat there was no longer good contact. I had to lap my cpu so that the two surfaces would make good contact again. Ultimately I don't think I gained anything by lapping my cpu.

So basically, unless your surfaces are messed up it's not going to help much.
