I'm looking to build a new PC that will be able to handle running multiple programs instantaneously. I would imagine that an Intel Pentium 4 w/HT would be a wise choice for this purpose. However, I'm trying to keep the spending budget in the $200-$400 range balancing price with performance. The cheapest P4 with HT I could find on Newegg was around $110, which is a little pricey. I was wondering if I should consider going with a diff intel chipset like celeron D, or should I go with an AMD athlon XP or sempron? Which would be the wisest choice for performance and price? I've had a celeron processor b4 on a Compaq PC i bought a looooong time ago, and frankly I've never been a fan of celeron D since. But maybe there has been changes in its performance. What do you guys recommend? I don't need to OC the CPU, I would just like it to be able to run multiple programs smoothly.
 
Maybe a Pentium D 805? It runs about $115 shipped usually on newegg. It's a dual-core CPU.
 
BTW i 4got to mention that ideally I'm looking for a processor under $100.
 
You simply wont find a processor under $100 that is an amazing multi-tasker, you won't even find one close. You are asking to much for too little to be honest. Go with the 805, you will be happy.

And by the way, if you have an A3700+ already you won't want to buy anything under $100, especially intel.
 
Pentium 805. 110 dollars newegg right now. under 100 is asking for too much. 10 bucks over, you can get a dual core.
 
yea, I figured I would have a hard time finding sumthing good under $100. Sounds like the Pentium 805 is the best choice. BTW this is not for me, it's just sumthing im buidling for sum1 else to use for music, movies, typing, etc. I just want to make it run as smoothly as possible for a cheaper price than a retail PC. On another note, what do u guys think performance rating for AMD Sempron, and Intel Celeron are these days? Honestly, by looking at their prices they go for, and having used celeron b4, I would imagine they perform poorly. Am I wrong?
