Processor Dead :(

Hey All,

I built a new computer last week:

-Socket 939 Venice Core Processor 3000+
-Gigabyte K8 Triton Pro SLI Mobo Socket 939
-Leadtek 7600 GS Video Card
-2* 512mb sticks of ram
-160 GB hard drive
-2 CD Drives

Well anyway i could not get this damn computer to show anything on the screen, and i really tried everything. I eventually ruled out everything accept the motherboard. So i bought a new motherboard (the exact same one) and my pc still doesnt work, so i changed the processor with a friends one and it boots. I put my processor in my friends pc and it dont boot. I got new parts for my computer and used some old ones, and right before i put my new parts in my pc, my pc was fine. I am wondering if the motherboard i got shorted out my processor or something, i seriously doubt if its static electricity that caused it to not work because i was wearing a anti-static wrist wrap.

So basically right now i am clueless of what to do, i dont know if i should try my friends processor in that motherboard that i first had and it short it out or something, and i dont want to just sell that motherbaord because i dont know if anything is wrong. And i dont know if i can send it back to gigabyte because nothing may be wrong with it.

I really dont know what to do right now but any suggestions will help,

if you put your friends in and it worked, your motherboard isnt murdering CPUs. you just got a bad proc send it back

I've heard alot of bad reliability stories about gigabyte's newer boards, but as far as i can tell your gonna just have to try and get a new cpu. Check out pricegrabber.com's cpus.

No you see i bought 2 of the same motherboards, the first motherboard it didnt work and i tried everything and thought it wasent the processor, then the second motherboard i put the processor in and it still doesnt work. But my computer was fine before i built my new pc. Which makes me think that the first motherboard shorted out the processor because i was wearing a anti-static wrist wrap.

I have never even heard of a motherboard shorting out a processor. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it. Just pop the friend's cpu in the first mobo. If it boots, then you just got a bad cpu. If it fails to boot, then the mobo is bad as well.

However, since you verified that your 3000+ cpu would not boot in your friends mobo and his cpu boots fine in your new mobo, I would say there is 99% probability that it is just the cpu that is bad.

I know it can be quite frustrating and scary to have a comp that does'nt boot, but just relax. You'll figure it out. We'll help you. Good luck

EDIT: I just want to verify something. You said that your computer was fine before you built your new pc. So does that mean that your 3000+ cpu was used and functional in a previous build, or is the cpu brand new ?

the 3000+ was used in another pc now that i put it with new components like the gigabyte motherboard it dont work. Thats y i thought it was odd because all i did was change the motherboards. And as soon as i done that it didnt work.

Ok, so the cpu was functional in a previous build. If you still have your old components, try to reassemble your old pc and see if you can get it to post. Just do enough to get video: mobo, ram, cpu, video card. That's what I would do.

Or go to bestbuy and purchase the cheapest 939 processor they have. Inquire about the return policy (call their location first and ask so you dont have to ask the person selling it to you, that looks fishy). If it boots, well, you know the problem.

All AMD processors carry a 3 year warranty, (or a 1 yr if they're OEM). You'll be covered, just RMA the thing.

i did get my old components to post tried them allready, i know its the processor though because i took it out tried a different and it worked.

Okay so thanks Arcygenical for telling me i can get a new processor because its under warranty. But i still dont want to try the other gigabyte motherboard with a different processor even though you said you have never heard of a motherboard shorting out a processor. But i cant think of any other reason because all i did was pop off the heatsink take out the processor put it in the new mobo, pop back on the processor and well... my processor dont work any more.

I want to just send the motherboard that i got (even though there may not be anything wrong with it) back to them, i dont know if they will accept it though.

I have my magical anti-death bracelet on, and I'm still alive tho, so go figure!

i've seen a mobo take out procs, it does happen.

Can big heatsink/fans short out motherboards?? Just wondering because well i have one of these:

And if something was touching the mobo well then i know what my problem is.

I've Build hundreds of computers both ways, and i can assure the anti static strip has helped. I've cetianly shorted out a board as well as a psu for not wearing a strip.

Same. I installed my CPU on carpet with no wrist strap. Maybe that's why it Oc's so good!
