Last year when I bought my 2.8ghz 533fsb processor, It came with an Intel CPU fan. I recently picked up a 3.0ghz 800fsb and I'm wondering if I can use the Intel fan with it. I didn't know if the .2ghz would make a difference, and I want to use the Intel fan because I heard it's one of the best (I'm using just a ThermalTake now).

So if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

Well the u could use the Intel Retail HSF, but i honestly wouldnt use that. Doesnt cool as good and it just looks like plain crap. The only pro's it has is noise. I'd just get a fan that is decently loud and performs. I have a P4 3.2E @ 4.0Ghz with a Thermaltake pipe101 using the Vantec Tornado 92mm fan. Its loud but damn does it cool.

Also, noise isn't everything. Some of the loudest, noisiest fans are surprisingly feeble (to be specific, they put out much more noise than real cooling power) - I came across one which failed to cool even the slowest Northwood CPU below 60°C at idle (in a 20°C room) and yet produced SPLs that exceeded 80 dBA. And some of the quieter fans cool surprisingly well for such lack of noise (though they are on the pricey side).

I could really care less about noise. The object for me is to have the best performance. And my machine is already loud as it is, I'm running 5x80mm fans, CPU Fan, GPU Fan, and 2 PSU fans.

So, what should I change my CPU cooler too?

It all depends on what temps your getting. If they are high then get a new one. I still wouldnt go with the intel cooler; they honestly suck bawls. So if you want performance get best air coolers and overclock the hell out of it

I have retail p4 3.0c and the stock HSF that came with just plain sucks. I upgraded it to SP-94 an never looked back. Honestly, only watercooling is better ;)

I just got my 3.2 Prescott for Christmas, I installed it along with a Pipe 101 and some AS 5, and I'm idling right at 50C in the BIOS w/ an ASUS P4S800D. Not good, right? Will the AS5 burn in and stuff? I have a slow 80mm fan blowing down onto the HS at the moment. Do I need to get a faster fan and have it blow up away from the HS? I'm worried about instability, and I don't want to blow up my new processor. My old Northwood 2.53 ran at about 40 after 5 hours of stress testing w/ Prime. Should I use a different cooler?

I'm not 100% sure I'm getting good contact with the heatsink. It's not loose or wobbly at all, and it seems to be down far enough, at least it was spreading the AS5 well enough when I locked it down...

Any Ideas?

You shouldnt have temps with that even its a prescott. It could be seated wrong, but if it isnt then how many case fans you have, video card etc. They all factor in; everything does. If you dont have enough air going in the case then thats the problem. add some more case fans., clean dust out, etc... try that

It's fine now. I upgraded the fan to a 90mm, and my temps are down to about 36 C w/ a BFG 6800 GT at about 48C core temps. I'm loving all these new components!

Thanks for the help.

PS: I did have to reseat the HS one time, the clips weren't pushing down enough on the I Bar. A simple adjustment to the I bar fixed it.
