I have a q6700 and it within my case you can hear a random clicking sound. (no, its not anything like a fan/etc hitting something).

But when I do hear this clicking sound, my cpu usage will drop to 0 and eventually go back up, then click again and drop to 0 and so on. Or it might continue randomly clicking and my cpu usage will stay very low in the single digits, while im doing something like shrinking a dvd, where my usage should be %100.

What could this be and what can I do to fix this?

EDIT: everything is at stock and it has just started doing this about 4 weeks ago.

Ok I got around to taking the side case off and listening and yes its the HDD. False alarm on the cpu, I guess the cpu usage dropping/etc threw me off.

I figured that it had to be the HD as CPU do not have moving parts. A CPU is only capable of making notes. B flat that is.

Your CPU usage was going up cause your HD Hardware( onboard memory) was sending interupts to the CPU. CPU says, "What up, what do you need", turn all its attention for it( hence usage going up) but gets no answer cause the mechanics of your disk failed. Just my guess.

Anyone for SOLID STATE DRIVES? They need to come down in price.
