I'm considering the following:

AMD Athlon 4850e oem/retail
AMD Athlon 5050e retail

The 4850e I can get OEM and provide my own heatsink+fan. The 5050 only comes with a heatsink+fan. I'm trying hard to reduce the price of my htpc.

If I get the 4850e OEM, I'm considering the following coolers:

Scythe SCMNJ-1000 80mm Sleeve "NINJA MINI" CPU Cooler
Scythe Shuriken

I'm a bit at a loss as to what to get...

1. The Shuriken is lower profile and cheaper. Are they both comparable wrt cooling effectiveness and noise?

2. Or should I just get the processor retail including cooler which would be the cheapest option for me. Are the included coolers with the above processors good enough and quiet enough?

I personally would go with the better processor w/ stock heatsink/fan if you plan a mild to moderate overclock. I went that route and can not hear a trace of it from even a couple feet away from the pc. I have heard others say the stock heatsink/fan combo is loud, but again dead silent to me.

I think the Minja as it is called would be great if you are overclocking it to the max or want to run possibly fanless.

I've never met a stock cooler that I liked; all of them I could hear from half way across the room easy and with a movie playing I could still hear it's faint, annoying whine from it's fan.

Stock coolers = crap for an HTPC

Anyways, OP, it depends on what case you are using. If it's a case with a layout like Antec's NSK2480/Fusion then go with the Minja and you could probably run it passively. I've had both coolers and I'm currently running the Shuriken in my Fusion but I had to replace the 100mm fan with a Yate Loon 120mm one because the 100mm made far too much noise.
 
i would go with the lower CPU and the ninja mini, i have a ninja mini in my HTPC on my 5000+ BE @ 2.8ghz

but my power bill just came and with my new x4 9600 @ 125w and my 5000+ BE @ 85w it ran me $100+ for the first time..... which is low for a house but high for my apartment in the winter....

so i just bought a BE-2400 45w and will underclock the X4 9600 to use around 85W


I plan on using the Ninja Mini w/o a fan on the BE-2400



sooooo i would get the lower CPU and better cooler, run it fanless if you can..
SO look for my 5000+ BE on the FS soon :)
