I am stuck on this one. I just got a x1800xt and anytime I play a game/run 3dmark/anything 3D the unit will power down after about a minute, there is no display corruption or slowdown of any kind during the minute that it is working. At first I thought it was just a bad card; but I got this really killer deal on it and ordered one for a buddy of mine at the same time, so I tossed the second card in and it does the same thing. The card I replaced was a 7800gt and the system was rock solid with that card. System specs are

intel 915pbl, 3.4p4, 2gig ram, 80gig satax2, no optical drive, 420 watt thermaltake psu.

The weirdest part is the system is 100% if I don't run anything 3D. I can sit here and surf the web, watch a movie and have prime 95 going in the background with 0 problems; but 1 minute into 3dmark system turns itself off every time. I have made sure to clean off all the previous drivers that were on the unit and such. I have also looked at the temps and it peeks out at mid60s when it restarts. This shit makes no damn sense, anyone have any ideas?

your PSU is definitely not up to the task... an X1800XT eats up a hell of a lot more power than a 7800 GT...

Yeah, I was leaning toward the psu being my problem but I didn't think the x1800 took that much more power over the 7800. Guess I'll pick up a antec neo 500 and see if that solves my problems. ty for advise.

I run a 400watt Zallman with my XT@XTPE + Opteron@2,7Ghz., 3 harddrives + DVD. No probs here.

x800xtpe is different than x1800xt

Wattage on the PSU isn't the issue, it's the amount of +12 current it provides. The 360/420/480W Thermaltakes have very weak +12 output...only 18A. A Prescott, X1800XT, and the fact that the PSU is rated at 25C and will thusly deliver below 18A on +12, and that PSU is clearly inadequate. Head to the PSU forum and see about getting a quality replacement. There's a 500W Thermaltake that's pretty good, as well as stuff from Fortron, Enermax, OCZ, Seasonic, and Antec TruePower.

This problem sounds familiar. Format your computer, this will eliminate any doubts about software. PSU requirements would be visible, from previous builds, prior to running any application. My PSU have 20A 12V rails, my rig runs fine. Hope you fix your comp!

Yeah, I grabbed that antec neo he500 and everything is running great now. Ty all for the help :)

im having similar trouble... i have the Fortron 450 power supply. dual 18w rails. is this a suitable ps for the x1800 xt.
