problems with risers?

I picked up 4 pcie 1x risers from an amazon seller that are powered. They were half this price when I ordered them: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HG1C702/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The main board that I tried was my Asrock Z87 killer. I wanted to do a hanging/multi GPU setup on this because it has so many pcie slots. 3 16x and quite a few 1x. I can easily run 3 reference GPU's hooked straight into this board. I'm still waiting on my 16x risers to come from china.

When I keep 1 card plugged into the 16x slot and put 4 cards hanging using the risers not a single riser based card gets recognized in windows or linux. I checked the powered molex SOOO many times and of course the GPU power connectors but just not getting recognized anywhere.

Is there a trick to making windows see the 1x risers? some weird setting to look for in my motherboard BIOS? I have another rig with one card working on a 1x riser and the other 2 are on 16x risers. Absolutely nothing fancy done there.

I have used riser cards with great success - just the one problem is some of the electrical layout on the board.

On the MSI GD45 for instance, if you actually plug anything into PCIe slot x4 (the first x1) then it disables all the other x1 slots. If you leave it open, the others work fine. On the GD65 though, this issue doesn't exist. I know a couple of other boards I looked at had some similar issues, some slots are disabled when others active.

Check the manual carefully for any word on this...
