Problems with new harddrive

I just bought a new 80 GB Maxtor HD for my computer. However I have some problems getting it to work.

First thing is, Windows 98 won't install. I partitioned the drive using the installer for SuSE Linux 8.1 (which installs without any trouble) but Windows 98 refuses to continue after formatting C:, claiming that there was an error formatting the drive.
A friend told me Win98 won't work with drives larger than 40 some gigs, and that I should go with Win2K instead. What do you guys say ?

Also, when booting up, the BIOS complains "Primary IDE channel: No 80 connector cable installed". What's up with this ?

I can't answer all your questions, but first, ideally, you should be using an 80 pin ribbon cable, not the older 40 pin cables that you may still see used with CD-ROMs. Starting with ATA-66, you need the 80 pin cable for your hard drive to operate properly. Get one of those first, and then see if you still have problems. If there's a limitation to hard drive size in Windows 98, it's 127GB, not 40GB.
