This will probably be a bit of a long post to describe the problem...
I just got an ATI AIW9800Pro to replace the aging GF4200Ti that was in there. My system was rock solid stable with the old card, but now has become very unstable.
Typical crashes are:
-OS locks up without warning
-Total graphical corruption followed by reboot
-Reboot without warning
-Hardware renderer crashing and the VPU recovery saving it and switching to software
All of these problems happen at random, could be 30s after bootup, or 2 hours, and the programs running when it happens make no difference.
Just to get it out of the way right now, My system is:
Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe (BIOS Ver 1012)
AMD Athlon-M @2400MHZ
1GB Samsung PC3200 RAM
Creative Audigy
ATI AIW9800Pro
Maxtor 60GB IDE drive, Liteon CDRW, Matshita DVD drive
Running WinXP SP2, all drivers are current.
I thought it may have been a problem with the NVIdia display adapter, so I ran NFR to get rid of residuals. It didn't help. Next I backed up my OS and reinstalled windows clean, as soon as the NForce drivers and ATI drivers were in, the crashes started again.
I have tried the latest Omega drivers as well as Cat drivers, I have uninstalled everything and reinstalled. I have disabled all unused onboard peripherals (Sound, second LAN, firewire, serial ports), no difference. I Have changed the memory timings to safe levels, underclocked the CPU, underclocked the GPU. All did nothing. I am not running any odd programs that may cause rendering interruptions; my system is fairly minimal.
I thought that heat on the video may be an issue, so I installed an Arctic cooling VGA silencer (after I lapped the mounting surface), it did nothing. The errors are random, doesn't matter if the computer is cold or hot.
I am at a loss. I would trade in the performance boost of the video card for stability right now. When it is running, everything looks fine and normal, and I get benchmark results where they should be.
Any ideas?
