I've had my XFX HD-587X-ZNFC Radeon HD 5870 for a couple weeks now. It's very fast, but I immediately noticed that it would show some minor graphic glitches after being worked hard for awhile. For example, the mouse cursor would quit looking like a cursor and start looking like a fuzzy vertical line.

Tonight I played a couple games of Company of Heroes and on the last game the whole screen started to shake/vibrate. I rebooted the computer a couple times and this affect won't go away.

I've run Fur-Mark a few times since installing the card and the hottest it will get is 77 Celsius.

My power supply is 1000 watt.

Is this card smoked already?
 
Check with the place where you bought the card for their return/replacement policy and if you qualify, get an RMA number and return it asap. Otherwise you'll need to contact XFX and pray they don't make you wait forever and a day for a replacement.
 
Newegg is shipping a replacement. Once I get that, I'll send the fried card back. Newegg made this very easy.

On a general note..... 77 degrees Celcius shouldn't be too hot correct? It runs hotter than my 280gtx... but it still seems to be in a reasonable range.
 
Before you give back the card, go into ATI Overdrive and enable Overdrive, then enable manual fan control.

Adjust your fan to 45% apply and save.

Now try your games and see what happens.

I used 45% on my E6 cards and they never went over 65C, 77C may be too hot for the card.

Is it overclocked? If so return it to stock values via Overdrive and see what happens.

Which driver version do you use? You could back up to 10.4 or 10.5 Catalyst and see what happens also.
 
Thanks. The card is not overclocked and I am using the latest set of drivers.. 10.8?

I put the fan at 45% manual and the temp. jumped to 89C before I stopped it. You sure I dropp the percent speed? Default was 50%.

The latest drivers are 10.9
The most consistant driver package has been 10.4
That default fan speed sounds odd. I think the default speen for all my 5870s (I've had 4) was 20%.
If your default was indeed 50%, then increase the fan % to 65 or 70 and run the game and check the temps.......again that default fan speed is way off from my cards....I've had 2 vanilla XFX and 2 ASUS E6 models......and 45% fan sped was a big jump from default on mine......cooling my be an issue on your card.
 
Thanks. My default was 50% on this card. I ended up going to 70% and that will keep the temp around 80C. Which is a bit odd, because when I orginally tested out the card, 77C was my absolute max.

I'll roll back the drivers to 10.4 and monitor the temp/performance.

Perhaps in the end, this card is simply defective and running hotter than it should be. My case is a liquid cooled Alienware and is very well ventilated. The hottest my GTX 280 ever got was around 69C if I remember correctly.

Well, unfotunately, I think this card is smoked.

Yesterday is was working fine, did the tests I mentioned above, played some CoH and everything was dandy. I logged off and went to bed.

I got home from work today and the screen-shaking (vertical shaking only) is back and won't go away despite loading up the 10.4 drivers and various reboots etc. Weird thing is... even after booting up and just being at desktop the card seems to kick off some decent warmth at 42C.

Good news is that the 10.4 drivers seem to max out at 82C :) I'll get a replacement card and start with 10.4 drivers and hopefully that does the trick.
 
Temps seem high, I have to serverely annoy my 5850 to get it above 70C so I would send it back

Yup.
I think you had a bad placement of the heatsink.
I had to work hard to get my 5870s above 75C and that was using only 45% fan.
I would bet if you lifted the Heatsink you'd find bad TIM or just plain poor contact.
 
My reference 5870 runs as hot as 91C when im running furmark for extended periods of time and under heavy gaming can get as high as 88C. I bought it at launch and it has never given me a BSOD or any type of graphical problem. I would think 77C would not damage the card in any way. Also, my idle temps, when the clocks are downclocked to 157/300, is 45C with 21% fan speed. I think that your card is probably in need of a replacement, however I doubt the temp is the issue.
