I have a 17" cheapo CMV LCD monitor. I really need to to replace this thing as it cannot do blacks/greys near the backlights (top and bottom) correctly. I have messed with every setting I can get and nothing helps. It's not too bad on normal static screens such as the [H] page but moves and games with dark enviornments are almost unplayable because of the distracting garbage on the screen. I think it has a very hard time reproducing shadows in dark environments and the end result is some kind of weird silver ghosting type thing. It's hard to describe. I tried photographing it but you really need a moving video or game to see it.

ANYWAY...what does everyone recommend as a replacement? I don't want anything greater than 17" and I really need something that doesn't have problem with dark videos and games. Should I buy an LCD TV? I've heard those aren't so great for text and things, but that doesn't really matter to me because i have this one for that. It's pissing me off so bad I'm almost ready to go and buy a CRT.

Hi mate, I have read your post and tried to understand your problem as you describe it.
It seems like your display has backlight leakage , among other possible problems.
Low quality (and especially older) TFT's cannot handle black levels very well, because of the inability of the panel to completely block the light radiating from the CCFL (cold-cathode fluorescent lamp). In addition, older TFT's really have trouble coping with fast gray-to-gray color shifts which leads to severe ghosting when colors aren't very bright.
Now combine that with poor viewing angle performance and a (perhaps) noisy VGA/D-SUB signal : a sad user experience

The good news is that modern TFT panels have improved by a lot in virtually every aspect
(black levels, contrast, brightness, rapid response (minimal/no ghosting), colors, etc...) :)

As for particulars, you might want to check out the new sony panels with x-black coating.
They offer very nice black levels and sweet contrast but they are kinda shiny so you gotta be careful with the lighting placement at home.
The Samsung PVA panels are also nice and offer good colors/black lvl./contrast without the glossy coating.
I hate recommending specific monitors, but I suggest you start looking around the web for
for 17 inchers. The lot of them is pretty decent, it's hard to go wrong, don't let the past experience sway you from buying a TFT again. Viewsonic, Dell, Samsung, Sony, LG, BenQ are some decent brands to look out for. Read the reviews and decide which is best for your needs/pocket!
Panels with DVI (digital) input are preferred, especially if your graphics card has a DVI output. Avoid 6-bit color panels, unless you like to game all day. They are a little faster but the color output is compromised.

Last, but not least, I do not recommend that you buy an LCD-TV. Usually they are built/meant to be viewed from a distance and suffer from low resolution and bad pc output due to custom resolutions. They are not worth considering unless you plan on spending some serious cash.

I hope this helped a little.

Cheers,
John

Yes, your reply is most helpful. I do have another question though. What should I be looking for in terms of lcd monitor specs? Contrast ratio and brightness (cd/m2) are the two things that I don't really know. Is it a case of bigger/higher is better? If I had to compromise, is it better to have higher contrast ratio or brightness?

Thanks for your help.
