Problems with my 120gb external maxtor

hey guys well i got a external 120gb one touch maxtor about 4 months ago and it has given me a few problems. the first time i was trasnferring some episodes formt he external to my internal and it said something about "delayed write failed,the files has been deleted" and it deleted those files form my external, so i got sxrewed over. and the 2nd time was yesterday, when i was sharing some stuff on a program and suddenly when i exit the prog my comp freezes and everything on my external gets erased, so now im here pissed and i dont know what to do. and to telly ou the truth i dont think ill buy something else form maxtor ever again. :mad:
 
the data isnt "erased"
and its likely not the HDD
it the USB halfassed interface and Windows


install the HDD internally and try to reestablish access
failing that use File Scavenger to do a direct scan and rescue the data
or DIY Data Recovery Disk Patch to try to rebuild the partition table and or Master File Table
data being erased simply means the partition table of Master File Table is fubard
the data is still sitting in plain sight for any ap to recover with a direct scan

but transporting a 3.5" form factor HDD is risky, they really arent made to be externals
so it could easily fail if your not real careful with it, laptops have special 2.5" form factor HDD that are much more robust
and still suffer a higher failure rate than fixed HDDs

large capacity externals are a brisk new profit center, but the inerface performance suxs
there are often OS issues, and reliability sux, all so you can loose more data in one fell swoop :p
 
well i conected it to the usb port and i went to access it, but it tells me that i have to format in order to start using my external again, so do you think that if i format filescavanger will still be able to find it?
 
Id pull the drive from the external and hook it up to the IDE
assuming it isnt an SATA interface which is unlikley

are you familiar with ESD precautions?

dont format the drive

by doing the above you will be bypassing any USB implementation issues
and it will be far easier and faster to determine what is the problem and rescue any data
once you have it pulled, check the jumper setting and attach it as a slave on one of the channels, that will liklely keep it from displacing your current boot drive in the BIOS boot order, then
BIOS > verify it is seen
then boot into the OS and
Start > Run > (type) diskmgmt.msc >
and tell me what you see
 
dude,but how can i connect it to be internal if its an external hd that i bought?
 
ok well i just connect my external into my pc and now its officially internal 120gb maxtor. if i did this and formatted, do you think that i will have a chance that the problem i had will not happen again? cause i think its was because of the usb connection. also do u think i should make a partition or something?

If so dont reformat ;)

whats it reported as? It have a drive letter?
 
ok well i formated :), but now im using file scavanger to see if it finds dsomething. ok here is a screenshot of the diskmgment and the drive letter is F.

well, Filescavenger should still be able to find the data, but next time dont format 1st :p
rescue the data to a different partition (you could even use the unallocated space at the end of the drive for some of it, if you partitioned and formatted it.
However data transfer would be slower than if you rescued to a different drive,
one ideally on the other channel\cable

how much data was on that HDD?
Do you have Partition Magic?
 
so now, what happned before shouldnt happen again right? no i dont have partition magic, but i know where i can get it. and the amount of data that was on the hd that got lost was about 40 gbs.
 
well there are a dozens of ways to fubar your data
but I gather that you might have experienced a power issue with that USB

to give you some ideas, and start actually backing up data ;)
 
so how much space u think i should keep resorved on partition magic? and to back up my data is there nay good programs? and where is the best place to reserve it at? by the way if file scavanger doesnt restore anything, is there possibility that another prog can succed in doing it? by the way if i installed the maxtor drivers so that i can use the external, can i uninstall the drivers cause i have it as an internal now?

ehh?? just asked if you had Partition Magic, if you did and say there was only 50GB of data on the old fubard partition, it would be written to the first half, so you could use Partition magic to resize the current partition making it say 40GB smaller with likely no data loss, that would give you a place to rescue the data to.

Nero and CD or DVDs, alternately Tape

it doesnt "restore" data, that implies it makes it reappear in place, it rescues data and writes it to another location
yes there are many data recovery aps, but I consider file scavenger among the best

thanks for the help. by the way if m drive get eased again then it wont effect my partitioned part right?
 
I originally had you pull the drive from the external to simplify the rescue operations
as an internal it will likely be faster, and safer
so I think its a good idea to keep it there, however if you need an external
review its power requirements, as Id guess that would be a likely cause
alternately research other similar corruption issues specific to USB externals
