Problems with Laptop HD or ...?

My laptop started doing something 'funny' recently ...
When I wanted to access the hardrive for any task besides like websurfing or something ...
It will sit there 'trying' to access it and make this repeditive type of sound kind of like a train but as if the hardrive is making it ... and it will do it for about 3 mins before I can bring up something ...

example; when trying to go to windows explorer I'll click on the C drive and want to see whats in there and the HD will do its thing; and it pretty much stops me from doing anything else on the laptop. And then 3 mins later it will show me what I wanted to see etc ...

Now I have a antivirus thing going and nothing was found ... I also deleated alot of programs so the HD basically has 65% free space. I also defragged the HD 2x ...

I cant think of when exactly this started up but it seemed somewhat recent ...

I hadnt dled any programs that I thought could be a virus ... but sometimes you never know etc ... I did dl some trial versions of some financial software recently but had since removed them from the computer ...

any other suggestions?

oh the HD doesnt make a clicking sound (I've had 2HDs go in my desktop before so I am familar with that clicking sound; this is my like I said a repeditive train like sound that keep going for 3-5 mins and makes it so I cant do anything on the computer - (ie my intial thought was the HD is fragged to heck but now I dont know (since I defragged it 2x) and it is still doing it)).

What's "train-like" mean? I assume it's a fairly quick clunk-a-clunk-a sound (like several times a second); that would indicate to me a head crash happened. But since it's still mostly working, I don't think that's the explanation.

Can you create a Linux liveCD on another machine (Knoppix will work fine) and boot into that? Then run "fdisk -l" and see what it reports. Take the disk name (probably hda) and do this: "dd if=/dev/YOURDISKNAME of=/dev/null bs=8k". That'll try to read the entire disk. It'll print error messages if there's something wrong with the disk.
 
it almost sounds like a virus to me. run hijackthis and post the result here. hopefully someone will be able to see something. you could just post what processes are running and how much processing power it is taking up too.
 
ya I checked the processing and I cant find anything ... although when I do the ctrl alt del thing it takes like 1 min to pop up ...

not sure I can do the linux thing cd ... never use linux before etc ...

Ill try the hijack this (will do it tonite and post the info here)
