problems with itunes and ipods

My friend just got an ipod
are there any alternatives to itunes to load songs on your ipod?

if not, how can you transfer songs to ipods from multiple computers with itunes loaded instead of it clearing the library every time he tries to load mp3's on from different computers.

I used EphPod for a while, I guess a lot of people like Anapod as well.
