ok, so im sure its been discussed, but i couldnt find anything, im dyin here. i built this sytem to play this game and quake 4. Q4 runs pretty goods...it lags every once in awhile, but it runs pretty decent. with these specs:
3200+ a64
1gb pc3200
7800gt bfg oc
200gb sata
anyway i run at 1024, no aa, 4x af, no soft shadows etc. it runs at 60 fps for a bit, then drops to around 30 or less most of the time. those are on any setting, chaning it from medium to maximum hits performance a little, but not a bunch. anyway, is it supposed to be like this? or did i get a bunch of bum parts? on a side note, wasnt f.e.a.r. the name of the villian group in no one lives forever? also made by monolith

I found this post to be of interest.. because it gives you hints on what to lower to gain max performance without taking a bit IQ hit...

"Problem:
Volumetric lighting lockup or minor rendering problems when viewed from certain angles on NVIDIA cards.

Solution:
Issue can be solved by lowering some of the detail and graphic settings per instructions below.

From Main Menu go to Options/Performance.
Select Advanced Video Card Options.

Under Graphics:

- Change Texture filtering from Anisotropic 4x to Trilinear.
- Change Texture Resolution to Medium.
- Change Shaders from High to Medium.

Under Effects:

- Change Volumetric Light to Off.
- Change Volumetric Light Density to Medium.

These changes are minimal to the visual loss, and increase performance greatly.
To further increase performance, you could turn shadows from Max to Medium and still get the most important parts of the shadows."

So - irregardless of crashing issues, these settings can help improve your performance while still being able to "enjoy the show". :)

Supposedly, the patch improves performance. Dramatically, according to some users. Other than that, I don't know what is limiting your performance. Your setup should be able to run the game much faster than 30fps (especially at the relativley low IQ you have chosen). I think F.E.A.R. likes 2gb of RAM.

Download and install the new beta driver 81.85. It came out the day before last. It adresses many of those issues. With that driver and the patch you should be fine. Also leave AA and AF on application controlled and adjust those in game. Make sure to Clamp the negative LOD bias.

I took a noticeable performance hit with the 81.85s (coming from 81.84s)... but I think vsync is really broken on the 81.84s.. I just didn't notice it before... doh. just for SLI tho.... I will do more experimenting tonight.

I remember seeing something about an sli vsync fix on the 85's release notes.

on machine in my sig, 10x7 with everything max except no soft shadows, medium bouncing sparks and 4x aniso no AA nets me a minimum of 57fps on the in-game test. In gameplay, however, when the shit really hits the fan, slo-mo with explosions and bitches dying firing guns everywhere, my frames drop to 25fps. F.E.A.R. is hardcore. Expect it to get slow in spots.

ROFL. well put. :D

wow, i'll attest to the power of the patch..i applied it, now im running at maximum everything, and its running a lot faster, and only slight drops in fps....

Athlon64 3200+
1gb Corsair Good stuff
200gb sata2 hdd
BFG 7800gt OC

no SLI....

Hm, and what framerates are you getting now relative to before? I installed the patch and it dropped my in-game test by 3fps..that's the only noticable difference. Interesting the patch doesnt mention performance increases except for a specific level, streets CTF..
