This is really long, and I'm sorry, but I really need the help -
First, the setup:
C2D E6300 @ 3.1ghz 1.475v
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L Mobo
BFG 8800GT 512mb
2x 1gb Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066mhz 5-5-5-15 @ 2.2v
I built this system close to a year ago, and for the most part it has been very reliable. About two weeks ago, I was having problems with the video output. Any video (AVI, MOV, MPEG, youtube, espn360, etc etc) would have unbearable artifacts. In internet explorer, some pictures (if it was a very graphic intensive page) would have the same style of artifacts. Over the next few days, it appeared to get worse, but never ventured into other areas of the desktop. Also, the same day, flash began to crash firefox and ie. At this point I reset my BIOS to default settings with no overclock. I put a little extra voltage on the CPU just for good measure. I read about it, reinstalled the drivers many times, reinstalled windows media player, all of my video codecs (even the standard ones mpeg, avi, divx, etc) to no avail. I even tried an alternate media player. Nothing was helping. I used orthos overnight and got no errors with a peak temp of around 64C. Games played fine (crysis got the same framerate as before, the built-in nVidia stress test worked fine, looked fine, same score on 3dmark of around 12,000). I tried doing a dxdiag from run, and it errored. My system was reporting that it had directx 8.2 running, so I used happy directx uninstaller to reinstall the default 8.1 that comes with XP, and then used it to install 9.0c from a game CD. After doing this, at startup my computer just shows the background image, the mouse cursor, and the task manager (cntl alt delete) will work. It never loads.
At this point, with the overclock off, I decided to install a copy of Vista (in lieu of the XP I have been running) because I had a TV in the living room I wanted to use with media center. The computer would BSOD every time the installer got to the loading screen, with
"Cryptographic subsystem failed a mandatory algorithm self test during bootstrap."
I read about it, looks like an overclocking or memeory related problem. It was orthos stable at 3.05ghz, so I didn't think it would be a problem with the CPU at stock speeds & voltages. I ran memtest overnight, no errors. I read around a bit more, and found that sometimes my version of the bios for this board (f6) can have overclocking trouble. I flashed to f9a (their beta version) using the built-in qflash utility on the mainboard. It came back successful, but now the computer won't post. It is in the process of being RMA'd.
Now, my questions:
-Is there any way this was a graphics card related problem? A few months ago, the sticker on the fan of the 8800gt came off and jammed the graphics card and was crashing my system. It took me a few days to figure it out.
-Is there any way there was a mobo problem, or even a CPU problem?\
