Try using DVDDecrypter to rip the DVD to disk and then use DVDShrink on the image.

Good advice. Shrink won't rip nearly as much as DVDDecrypter. However, if you select "main movie", rather than the entire DVD, DVDShrink will most likely do the rip. It's the "extras" that often trip up DVDShrink.

so ill be able to create an image with DVDDecrypter and then just use nero to burn it to a disk?

No, you use DVDDecrypter to RIP/decode the DVD to an image file (.ISO I think). Then you open that in DVDShrink and shrink it down just like you would if it were an actual DVD.

DVDDecrypter RIPs DVDs faster and more reliably than DVDShrink, it just doesn't let you compress it to fit on one layer - thats where DVDShrink comes in.

.ISO definately

I decrypt to an ISO then mount it to a virtual drive (Daemon Tools)
then w\ DVD Shrink rip out the menus and assorted junk, then rencode \compress it
(generally compressed to 80% ) then burn it with nero

(set preferences)

mount the image (scroll down)

rip out the junk

requires more working space, generally the 8GB of the DVD image as an ISO
plus the 4+ GB of the re-encoded files your going to burn
but its never failed

I rip the DVD to individual files with DVD Decrypter, and then encode directly with DVDShrink. That also works ok. It's the lazier way.
Ice Czar's way is nice, if you want to do a more custom job of editing. I usually backup the entire DVD, or just the main movie. I've seen a couple of times when a result between the two would have been nice, however.

of course or Id have to lock this :p
you are allowed to backup your media, after all you bought a license to view the picture
and it doesnt have a time limit, but media will eventually degrade

very first thing I do is backup the DVD then put it away and watch the backup
when I need another then Id break it out again and carefully store in in the meantime with regular "checkups" to make sure its not degrading

just wish I had all the money back for media I bouight and then got lunched
records. cassette tapes, CDs, VHS, Ive bought some albums three times
