Hello, first time poster long time lurker :)

I am having a few problems with my computer and was wondering if you guys can help me diagnose and pinpoint the problem.

computer specs:
CPU: intel Q6600 @ 2.4Ghz(default), VID 1.325
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R ver.1.1, BIOS ver:13e
Memory: Gskill 4x2GB sticks, model F2-8500CL5-2GBPK
Power supply: corsair HX620
Video Card: amd (gigabyte) HD6950 (not overclocked or flashed)
Hard Drives:
2x Western Digital black 1TB Drives, model WDC WD1001FALS (windows on 1 of the partitions)
1x SAMSUNG HD204UI 2TB drive (flashed with latest firmware)
1x Intel SSD 40GB Value Drive (Latest firmware and toolbox installed, this houses the WoW files)
Dvd-rw: TSSTcorp CDDVDW SH-S203B (perhaps samsung???)
Usb: 1x logitech mx510 mouse, 1x logitech g11 keyboard, playstation 2 usb controller device (not plugged in)
case fans: 4xgentle typhoon 120mm, 1xTuniq Tower 120 Extreme CPU Cooler (default fan)
Opertaing System: Windows 7 SP1 (updated, changed power settings to performance, turned off windows indexing, superfetch remains at default values)

I believe that is all, system info gathered with "PC Wizard 2010"


background: I built this computer 3-4 years ago and had nothing but problems with it. Took me forever just to get default stable in the BIOS and still that did not fix all of my problems.

Problem1: Whenever there is high disk access on any of my hard drives, my computer slows to a halt and I can not run any other programs. This usually happens when I am copying large files or a lot of files from one partition to another. Does not matter if the partitions are on the same drive, I still get a computer slowdown.

Problem2: This is mainly a gaming performance issue. I play World of Warcraft mostly and my fps is in the 40's-80's depending where I am. I thought my system was good enough for it, but apparently it isn't. Here is a list of what I tried:
1 - lowered shadow quality to low
2 - deleted cache,WTF, Interface folders in my wow directory
3 - changed most of the amd CCC to "use application settings"
4 - did a format and reinstall of operating system with updated directx,drivers, windows update stuff
That is all I can remember at the moment, but I am guessing this is related to the I/O issue in problem1.

I am wondering if these issues are power supply related, but that does not seem likely as I had problems with my motherboard since day 1. Could not send it back as I did not have another computer to use at the time nor did I have the extra money to buy another motherboard.

If anyone knows any tools, programs, or settings that I can check with, please chime in. I will get whatever info you need with pics if need be.

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to get as much info into the post as possible.

Those issues do not sound PSU related.

Problem 1: Sounds like a mobo's storage controller issue. Or a faulty driver or two. Honestly, try to RMA that mobo if you still can.

Problem 2: You haven't described the what exactly your gaming performance issue is. 40's -80's FPS doesn't mean anything without us knowing what resolution you're playing at. Though with that said, your CPU might be a bit of a bottlneck depending on what resolution you're playing at.

Problem 1:I thought it was the storage controller as well,if it is a driver problem, is there a way to find out? my motherboard is not under warranty anymore and I am having trouble finding a decent P45 replacement for it that does not cost more then $80. I prefer new motherboards and not used, but I guess I can not be picky.

Problem 2: Ah, sorry for not asking a question or describing the problem. My "problem" is I expected my FPS in WoW to remain high and not drop to 30FPS or less dependng where i am. I wanted to know if this is normal or does it seem like a problem?

An in-game example would be this: I am on my flying mount high in the sky doing nothing but remaining idle as I was reading my mail the mailman brought. I noticed I had 90FPS when I started to read the mail and when I looked back up at the screen, my FPS was down to 30. There was no one else around, not many trees or plants to render and I was too high to see any monsters.

I have 2 monitors hooked up to my video card through DVI.
monitor 1 - Hanns-G HG281D 27.5" LCD @1920x1200 resolution
monitor 2 - HP w2207 22" LCD @1680x1050

I tried playing WoW in fullscreen with just the hannsg monitor hooked up and I still got the same FPS drops.

I bought the 6950 a couple of months ago, I used to play with a geforce 260 and had the same problems. I thought I was just limited by my video performance so that is why I upgraded my video card.

I am not sure what other info I can tell you, but if you post what info you need I will be happy to post it. Thanks

Out of curiosity, is AHCI enabled in the BIOS? What anti-virus are you using? Try rolling back to an older driver.

Yeah you're basically looking at used hardware at that point since socket 775 is pretty much dead at this point. Hit up our For Sale/For Trade subforum

Yeah, that sounds normal to me. The mail is being loaded from the server hence the slow downs. Since you're basically playing a network-based game, the performance of the game is related to your ping or lag or server load. So you could have the fastest gaming PC out there but it won't mean anything if the game server you're connected to is overloaded.

With that said, there is a very good possibility that your CPU is slow for WOW. Unfortunately WOW does not scale beyond two cores and I've been seeing reports of people needing to OC their CPUs to 3.6Gz just to get high FPS out of that game. So once you sort your storage issues, OC that Q6600 to 3Ghz to alleviate some of the bottlneck.
