Problems with Catalyst Drivers

So I downloaded the two files from ATI's website. One was something with .NET, to be installed first, and the second was the Catalyst 6.6 Drivers. I did not install the drivers on the CD first, but instead just put my card in, went to ATI's site, and downloaded the latest Catalyst drivers.

Now I get strange errors when I try to run Catalyst Control Center : CLI Application (Command Line Interface) has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. and then it closes AFTER it has been open.

Usually though, I can't even open it because it says I cannot make any changes and that I should contact my System Administrator about this.

What the hell should I do? I just got the refurb x800XL from ATI so it should be okay... plays games and everything, but I can't figure out what is going on with it. Help!
 
there are two driver version one with the CCC which would be a nice feature if it didnt slow down the boot up sequence sooooo much and the other one without the CCC, so u get the regular control panel application, for the CCC u need the .net stuff installed. I could just install your windows from scratch or uninstall the CCC driverz and install the other ones.

What?

So there is the .NET one that is REQUIRED (says so on ATI's download site), and then download 2 is NOT required?

Tell me how to do this step by step. Uninstall what? Download what? Then install what?

Why is it acting the way that it is in the first place?
 
Also, do I even need the Catalyst Control Center? Aren't there better drivers to use out there then the official ATI ones? I'm assuming that there is probably a more thorough control panel as well...
