Problems with boot up

So, I finally ordered my new computer, but I'm still going to attempt to get my old one working until the new one arrives. The problem is that it will boot up and get to the Windows loading screen and then just freeze. I've tried several things:
1. Formatting (it got through all the stuff with the BSOD background, but it froze during the actual setup)
2. Clear CMOS + take out battery
3. Check HD (it is set to master)
4. Reseated RAM

I don't know what else to do really. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Windows XP SP2 is the OS

Did you change your motherboard/any other computer component before this happened? Get an XP CD and try to reinstall XP.

Most likey lt it is a defective stick of ram...if you have more than one....try it with the individual sticks......

I already did try to reinstall XP and it didn't help. Like I said above, I could get through the formatting section, but when it reboots to go through the rest of the setup, it freezes after a few seconds into the setup process.

I have 3 sticks of RAM so I'll try it with each individual one.

EDIT: Looks like it was the RAM, I'm only running one stick right now and the Windows Setup is working. I think I'll install Windows using this one stick and then test the others once I have it installed.

Check the thermal paste between processor and heatsink..........if it has deteriorated it can become a thermal barrier.

If you have a spare Hard drive....try it as well.....

Turns out it wasn't a stick of RAM but my second Dimm slot. I guess I'll just have to live with 1GB instead of 1.5 for another few days (then I get to use 4GB ).

if the dimm slot is busted, maybe you should RMA to get a new board if you want to upgrade to more ram in the future? or is 2x2gig sticks the maximum your gona go to?

This mobo is a 4-year old nforce2 mobo. I'm getting an entire new system (case, mobo, monitor, all the other hardware). Don't think I'll be RMAing it anytime soon. ;)
