problems with 9700 pro install

Here is my problem:

I upgraded from a 9000 pro to a 9700 pro. I installed gart drivers from Nvidia, version 2.45. I install the 9700 pro then downloaded the latest ATI drivers and installed them along with the ATI control center.

When I rebooted I got an application error and my machine went to a black screen. After repeated reboots with the same results I started up in safe mode and deleted the Catalyst drivers and control center.

I reinstalled the ATI drivers but not the control center since I determined that was what was causing my pc to go to a black screen.

Now my desk top looks fine, internet pages look fine even clips played in win media player look fine but when I try to play a vid game like Halo or UT the vid is so crappy it’s unplayable. I have all these bizarre lines running through everything at weird angles.

Here is my system:

Emachine with nforce chipset MB
512 meg DDR2700 ram
athalon XP3000 cpu
WIN XP sp1
Had 9000 pro upgraded to 9700 pro


Any suggestions?
 
By Gart drivers youre referring to the Nforce platform drivers right? As for the ATI video drivers, you might try a prog like Driver Cleaner to completely remove the video drivers. THEN reinstall the ATI video drivers. Personally I use the Omega drivers from omegacorner.com.
 
Well I installed a 9800 pro in my sons emachine which is exactly like mine with no problem so I would assume that my ps is not the issue.

I will try a driver cleaner and see if that helps.

could be a heat issue with the gfx card, is the hsf seated flat? Do you have an extra cooling fan? point it at the card if so and see if it helps... is the hsf fan working?

First off, Welcome to the [H].

Sorry to hear your problems, what wattage is that emachine's power supply?
Your card might just be more than it can handle.
 
Have you ever considered reformating? That is guarenteed to fix it if it is a driver residue issue.
 
Thanks for the welcome! I am going to check the wattage tonight. You could be right about that. Since it works well unitll I stress it with a game I suppose that could be the problem.

And yes I have a restore disk and am thinking if the wattage is ok 350 or better, I will resort to restoreing.
