Yesterday I started to get dots and dashes under and through the icons on my desktop and above my cursor. In IE I also get them on the toolbar at the top but never on any web pages. In fact I was getting them all over except on web sites. So I decided to update my ATI drivers, Well that eliminated all the dots and dashes but created new problems. The one I'm most concerned about is when I scroll a web page, instead of just moving the page up and down the page will refresh to where I'm moving the page to. There's a line that goes from the top to bottom as it refreshes. I hope I explained that ok

The second problem is when I start the computer and check the event viewer in the error log under system I get two warnings which are the same. Source is ATI2mtag (12c return failed). Error ID 44044. I have searched for two hours and can't find a fix. Again I'm most concerned about the first one.

Any help would certainly be appreciated.

Did you completely remove your old drivers (using drivercleaner) before installing your new ones?

Sounds like smartgart didn't run properly when you reinstalled the drivers, or your AGP miniport driver isn't installed properly.

The original problem you described (corrupted screens) sounds very much like an issue with the memory on the card failing.

Thank you. Just an update. If I go back to the old driver the errors go away but the screen corruption comes back. Installed the new drivers a second time and same problems.

Tried running smartgart with the new drivers? It's supposed to run automatically on the first reboot after you install the drivers but you might try running it manually.

Thanks again. I think you are right about the memory. The corruption started now with the new drivers. This computer is four years and i think it needs to be replaced. Since I don't want to get a new one for a few months (waiting for Vista). I'll replace the video card.

This may sound far fetched but maybe it is getting hot and going bad, but try blowing alot of air over it, like with a floor fan to see if that helps.
