Problems with 3.06 Northwood install

I picked up a 3.06 Northwood to put into a Gigabyte GA-8IHXP board; replacing a 2.26. I'm having some proglems getting it to work.

The BIOS recognizes it as an HT chip, but the splash screen shows it as 1.6ghz. The BIOS shows a VCore of 1.2v. I thought that it might be throttling with the old hsf. CPU temp shows only 36 in the BIOS.

More troublesome however, is that the machine does not boot when I set it to boot from RAID. As soon as I change the BIOS and hit okay, the HD and CD LEDs go on solid and the machine hangs. I can clear the CMOS and recognize the two IDE drives, but as soon as I set the BIOS to RAID it craps out.

I'm using the newest F8 BIOS.

This chip is an engineering sample. Could that have anything to do with it? Thanks...

My first thought was Mobile (1.2V vcore, 16x100 for SpeedStep in battery mode, etc). ES might have the same traits. Basically, your board just might not recognize it properly. Try manually raising the voltage (I think 1.5V is Northwood default?). 3066 is 23x133, so set that by hand also.

Your FSB should be 133mhz, and multiplier at 23x. I'm not sure what an ES would autodetect for settings. Your board may be remembering the 17x multiplier from your old P4 2.26ghz.

The multiplier is locked, so I can't manually set it. I've reset the BIOS several times, and loaded the fail-safe defaults, so my old settings shouldn't be a factor.

Maybe this is a mobile chip. That might explain why it doesn't like the RAID. Being an ES, it isn't marked like normal chips. Unfortunately, my knowledge is pretty slim.

maybe whoever sold it to you screwed you over

im not trying to make you feel bad or anything but it does happen where ppl sell stuff as different items
like that one ebayer who is selling a 7Ghz PD which is really an overclocked PD 920 at 3.5GHz

btw i dont think mobile chips dont like raid

That guy on EBay clearly ways that those processors are overclocked Pentium D 920's. They people who are getting scammed thinking they are getting a 7ghz processor deserve it for not researching or even reading what they're buying.

OP: Can you post some screenshots of CPUID?

Well the guy is an HF member, and seems pretty reputable. He has another one that I may swap. The fact that the BIOS recognizes the chip as HT suggests that it's legitimate, since the 3.06 was the first one with HT. Being that it's an engineering sample, it may just be something with this board. I'm going to put it into another Gigabyte board (an 845) which has higher FSB options and see what it does.

Multiplier locked means yours probably isn't an ES. I'd say the chances are high that your chip is just a Mobile.

There are ES chips that have locked multipliers.

can you verify that you have 512KB cache or is it 1MB cuz if its 1MB then might be a mobile prescott or one of hte screwed up non retail cpu's that dell and them get
like the Pentium4 511 and 513 and 519

I'm not sure, but it might be a question of motherboard support- I remember back when Celeron Mobiles were the chips to have, everyone was saying that you needed an Asus board to really push it. It might be the same thing for your P4-M.

Also, my mistake in my first post: 12x133 for 1.6, not 16x100. I forgot that SpeedStep only adjusted multipliers.

I'd bet its a mobile 3.06Ghz chip. I've seen tons of those going around. They default to a 12x multiplier. Which 12x133 = 1600.

Basically you bought yourself a 2.4C. (a 12x multiplier chip with HT, if you run it at 200FSB (800 QFSB), it will be at 2.4Ghz just like a 2.4C) Looks like you're going to need an 875/865 to get the most out of that chip... IE: crank the FSB up to 255 it will be at 3.06Ghz!

Well ain't I dumb. Hope the guy will take it back... although, if I really can get it up to 3.06 with a different chipset I might consider that, unless that's just too much hassle...

well you can try using the program RMClock to change the multipliers in windows that always worked for on my Mobile 532's which are Mobile Prescott 3.06's
enabled me to get them up to 4Ghz by increasing fsb to 200 and just upping multi to 20x

I downloaded both rmclock and Speedswitch, but I can't seem to find where to change the multipliers. Am I missing something, or just dumb?

From what I saw in my 2 seconds of looking you can change in to max performance mode that will automatically use the highest multiplier settings. I am not an expert in this...hopefully someone who knows more will add something.

open RMClock
click on the management tab
checkmark Use P-State Transitions
then click add and choose the multiplier value you want
click apply and now your cpu will run at the lowest multi in that list at idle and run at the highest on the list at load

and make sure in the AC Profile and Battery Profile it says Automatic Management if u want the Speedstep type function

"Use P-State Transitions" is greyed out for me
