just wondering.. a friend of mine is buying a new pc, and i suggested the 256MB 9600XT for him, he ordered it.. and apparently the store doesnt stock it anymore because they said that they've had huge returns of it, and that it performs slower than the 128MB. I've never heard of this and was just wondering what any of your experiences have been. I'm fairly trusting in ATI as my 9700pro has been an amazing card for me, and dont like hearing bad things about them without anything backing it up.

he will like a 9700pro 128 or 9800np 128 better than the 9600xt 256.

for one, the 9700/9800 have 8 pipes and 256-bit memory bus. the 9600xt has 4 pipes w/ 128 bit bus.

If he's going for budget, get a Sapphire 9600XT (got mine for $147 from zbuy.com) 128mb. The 256mb versions use TSOP memory, not BGA. Most of the TSOP is has slower timings, and the 9600xt really doesn't have the horsepower to utilize all 256mb.

If he want's more performance and not too worried about the budget end, get 9800pro for a little over $210.

I have also heard the exact same thing about the 256MB cards having poor performance compared to th 128MBs (except the 9800XT). If only the search worked....

found the answer on rage3d (they have a search function ;) ). basically just saying that the memory is slower on the 256MB. He went for the ATI branded 9600xt now anyways. he doesnt do a huge amount of gaming, so its a good price/perf for him

the memory on the 256 mb version isn't just some nanoseconds slower, it is also of the older tsop variety.
