Problems w/ Optical Output on GTXP

Hey,

On my other PC (used as an HTPC of sorts, etc) I just installed my old GTXP. The drivers installed fine, but I'm having a problem with the optical output.

I'm using Logitech Z680s, and when I use the Optical connection it only works with the Front Left and Right speakers. Furthermore, the system volume controls no longer seem to work (mute and volume adjustment have no noticeable effect).

The surround works fine when using the analog connectors (F L/R. Surround L/R, C/Sub) but I'm currently using them for my other PC.

The system is an Athlon XP running on an MSI K7TPro2 on Win XP Pro.

the problem is:

a) I don't get 5.1 sound, instead only stereo
b) Sound is not adjustable via software AT ALL

The only way you'll get surround through optical is if you have an nforce motherboard with SoundStorm. That's the only current audio chipset that does Dolby Digital encoding, unfortunately. I'm in the same boat with my nforce3 motherboard, which nvidia decided didn't need SoundStorm like the previous boards.

then what exactly is the purpose of the optical output?

The volume slider will do nothing to digital output. You can't make a digital bit "louder", because it has no inherent amplitude until it is decoded.

If you shout the zero, or whisper the zero, it does not impart more or less zeroness. How Zen is that?

If you had an outboard DAC that is better than the DAC stage on your soundcard, then you could use the digital output to bypass the inferior DAC stage. It'll still be stereo only, however. Also, you can passthrough DVD soundtrack bitstreams. That'll be surround, but it's previously been encoded.

That sound about right for a digital output.
