Problems w/ DMA in mobile HDD rack, need new solution

I have had four of these for almost two years now....

They seemed to have run fine up until now. I rebuilt my linux fileserver had a hefty upgrade on a 400mhz BP6 celeron w/ a promise IDE card, 2x120 Maxtor, 2x180 Hitachi/IBM set up on LVM, and 1 10 gig root drive. One of the Hitachi drives was experiencing random DMA timeout messages, for about 2 weeks. until I took both of the 180's out of the rack and ran cables strait to them, and all apears to be fine now... for now. So im asuming somthing was screwy w/ the drive caddy, but i need to replace these racks w/ another way to mount them, possibly some better drive racks, or maybe just a new case w/ lots of hard drive slots. I only want to spend about 75 bucks or so for these for drives, any ideas?

pretty sure they are in development, but I havent actually found any yet
 
dang, I couldnt have asked for a better answer to the problem and why it happned, thanks Ice for the help. Now its what I should do to fix the problem, new, quality, mobile bay w/o that cheap ass connector or a good case w/ lots of expansion for the inside.
 
at this juncture, you have to ask yourself is the mobility really worth it, will you be migrating to SATA, would Firewire or USB data transfer suffice for the needs, (all of which actually support hot swap)

Im currently holding off, on exactly this issue
hoping for an integrated swap bay with ther IDE to SATA interface as I mentioned, easy enough to find the bridge cards for the HDD, but not yet integrated in the swap bay.

Ive had difficulty finding alot of information on "quality" in typical PATA to PATA bridge boards, for swap bays

the exception would be the Promise Superswap drive enclosures

as they support actual hotswap with Promise RAID cards, employing a propriatary sideband technology, and Id assume a very robust bridge. But the price is just killer considering everything is heading to SATA

so Ive elected to wait ;)
